The Mattapan-Ashmont Line
The Mattapan-Ashmont Line is a short trolley line connecting the Ashmont terminus of the Red Line with Mattapan, another community within Boston.  It is considered an extension of the Red Line, a heavy-rail rapid transit line that runs through the center of Boston.  It is an independant operation, however, since its equipment cannot operate on the Red Line, and is maintained separately.  PCC cars, built in 1945 by Pullman-Standard, serve the line exclusively.  These cars previously ran on the Green Line, Boston's subway-surface system.  One feature that is unique to these PCCs is the left side center doors, incorporated to allow operation in the subway.  The PCCs were rebuilt between 1978 and 1983, and are now going through another rebuild program.
