Whitsett search
I am searching for the father of Samuel Stockard Whitsett. Samuel said he was born in NC in 1818 and migrated to TN sometime around 1850 or before. Hopefully whole family including father came to TN. Settled in Bedford County but left there after 1870 travelling to Lyon County, KY with wife, Elvire and five children. Have found no record of Samuel's marriage in TN.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,
I have been on a search for any information about my great grand father. It has led me back to Tennessee. Rutherford Porter Cawthon was born in 1822 in Tenn. The next place I find him is getting married in Texas in 1854. I have no knowledge of his home town or his parents or of any siblings. I was wondering if this name has ever popped up in your searches. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It appears in rootsweb that you have information on the Tennessee Wall(s) family.  My great grandfather Joseph Riley Wall (b. Alabama)  was the son of Isaac Berry Hillman Wall (b, Alabama) who, in turn, was the son of Isaac (?) Wall (b. Georgia) whose wedding to _______ Smith of Tennessee was noted in DeKalb newspapers in the early 1800s.  Right now I am in the midst of preparing to move and my records which are more detailed are already packed.  After January I should be able to give you dates.  The older Isaac Wall served in the War of 1812, but I have been unable to locate him in the Georgia census of 1800, 1810 or 1820 so have run into a brick wall.  Is it possible that he is related to your Rufus Riley Wall?

Hi Mary
The Rufus Wall mentioned on my web pages is not mine in particular and the info was sent to me from someone else and I posted it for them.

My Wall line is Robert Wall, born 1729; his son is Burgess Wall, born 1775, and daughter of Burgess is  Susannah (Anna Wall) who married Wm John Anthony Weakley.
Much of the info on my Genealogy and Tennessee website was furnished to me by others.

Good luck in your search!!

They told me in Springfield, Tennessee that you are doing work on my Warren family. I have just returned from Robertson County where I uncovered conclusive evidence that Isaiah Warren, s/o Jesse and Rhoda, did not die Nov.23, 1862, buried in Old City Nashville, but died June 14 or 15, 1857 near White Hill.  Archives has a file of original documents with a bill to his estate from Dr. B. Walton for services May 31-June 13, 1857, and one from W.P. Doris for a coffin made on June 16, 1857, and one dated July 1, 1857 from G.F. Lucus for burial.

Are you related?  I descended: Jesse-Isaiah-Isaiah,Jr.-Russell-Thomas

Dear Nancy,

I have talked with Robert Powell Carver in the past and he was VERY helpful on a number of genealogical issues.  Really a wealth of information.  Recently I was visiting in Virginia and found copies of letters he had written in the 1950ies.  I emailed the brobpat address but got a bounce back.  Perhaps he doesn’t have email anymore?  I also called the number he had left me but got no response.  The last time he and I had communicated, I had told him of these letters that he had written and he had mentioned that he would have been interested to see copies.

Do you know of his new email?

Very best regards,

Grover & Genny,

I saw your discussion re: Lain-Shannon families at http://members.aol.com/genny1/lane.html and wondered if you have any information about a Sarah Lane/Lain/Layne marrying into the Shannon family. My earliest *confirmed* ancestor is Layne Shannon (b. 1789 or 1791) and some information says he was the son of James Shannon and Sarah (Unknown). His name is variably spelled Lain/Lane/Layne/and even Laney. There is no other such name in the Shannon family that I can find. My suspicion is that James married into the Layne family.

Can you help?

For other Lane/Lain/Layne family researchers: *ANY* information you can provide about Lane/Lain/Layne marriages to Shannons would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Central State Hospital Cemetery, Nashville, Tennessee

From: dbmcbay@fayelectric.net

Hello Nancy

Recently my husband had a doctor's appointment in Nashville. It was very early on a Monday morning and we live in Lincoln County which is about a 2 hour drive. To keep from having to get up so early and try and beat the early morning traffic we decided to go to Nashville on Sunday and get a motel room. We found Dell Corp. and rode around it, even in the parking lot, it is a wonder we weren't stopped by a guard, wish we had been but didn't see one, would have asked him what I am about to ask you.
When I first found out about Central State Hospital's Cemetery I was told that they were trying to get the cemetery recognized by the state and wanted the cemetery fenced off and a monument placed at the site. I was told that since there were no records of patients that there would be no individual stones placed but one monument for all.   Later I received an email from someone from Centerstone saying that the cemetery had been fenced off and that it looked like the monument would be indeed placed there. I wish I could remember who sent the email. Anyway, we could not find a monument or a portion of the land fenced off. Can you tell me if this happened or not and if so where it is located so that I might re-visit it on our next trip to Nashville in two months when he returns to his doctor. I just would like to take a picture of the monument so that I might add it to my page on my husband's grandmother.
Thanks for your time in reading this email, I know you are truly a busy lady, keep up your genealogy work....take care, Diana McBay

Hello, I have posted message before about the CSH Cemetery. In the message I said that I thought my husband's grandmother might be buried there because she died as a patient there sometime in between the years 1930-1946 but that I couldn't pinpoint it any closer than that.  Well, with the help of a Random Acts of Genealogy Kindness Tennessee Volunteer I have found Clara Howell McBay's death certificate. It gave her birth and death dates which I didn't have but more importantly it gave us her cause of death and her condition in which she was admitted and her place of burial which was exactly where we thought in the hospital cemetery. The undertaker was C. B. Sanders of Nashville and by W. H. C. (do you think this is the funeral home that buried her?) The doctor that signed her death certificate was Henry M. Cox M.D. Her death was Jany 31, 1942. If anyone else needs this data they might try getting a volunteer to help with their search. I couldn't go to vitals as my gap was way too wide for a 3 year search. I just wanted to say thank you because if it hadn't been for finding your site years ago, I wouldn't have known about the cemetery on the hospital grounds and I probably wouldn't have pushed to find her. Thank you and God Bless. Diana

Hello Nancy,
Yes by all means please post my email. I had just about given up to thinking that I would never find my husband's grandmother. I'm sure there are others out there that think the same. I couldn't believe how much data that Clara's death certificate gave us. Hopefully all of the death certificates for patients dying there will do the same. Again thank you for your site, it opened the door for me....now I am on the search of Clara Howell and John Thomas McBay's marriage certificate. Wouldn't you know, it isn't in the home town record books! At least not under the Howell name. On January 11, 1920 there is a John McBay and Clara PRICE! Supposedly there was only one marriage for her, according to the 1920 census which was taken on January 13, 1920 she was 21 and had been married to John 2 days.....Heaven knows why she would give her name as Price. But then she was admitted to CS in 1930 as mentally disturbed so she could have had issues when they married, but why would John Thomas let her give a last name that wasn't hers? More mystery me to solve!!!!!!!
Sorry, I get carried away sometimes. Please feel free to use my data for your site....it's the least I can do to repay you for your help. Diana

Subject: Lemuel Nicholson

Hello, Nancy:

I have been reading your posts on Wilson County folks and wondered if you could tell me anything about Lemuel Nicholson.

He was father of Elizabeth Nicholson, wife of Sampson Bridgers. They both bought at the sale of estate of James and Margaret McNeely.

Lemuel Nicholson left power of attorney, dated 27 March 1807, in Nash County Tennessee stating "that he was about to move to Tennessee."

On 6 September 1817, he sued William M. Nicholson for damage of $1,000.[County Court Loose Records Wilson Co., TN] Don't know who this William M. Nicholson was.

On 25 November 1820, he married Lavina Young. Robert Young was bondsman.

On 3 May 1825, he purchased 3 midlins of meat at the sale of James McNeely & Margaret McNeely.

Despite the above dates, I have not i! dentified him on the 1820 or 1830 census. He evidently was living with someone.

Can you tell me anything about this? I would appreciate it very much. He is an elusive man.

Hello. Hoping you can help with this as I have spent the last few years searching for this person.  Have posted on Rootsweb with no response. My great aunt's name was Sarah Jane Beecroft Cooper and she married someone in Tennessee.  They lived in Memphis as I have postcards signed from her to my grandmother Hannah Beecroft Whitcomb (her sister) from there. She used to make me handmade dolls clothes and send them to Minnesota when I was little. She was the daughter I believe of Thomas Beecroft. I would really like to find this family if there is an extension. I believe she was born sometime in the late 1800s and probably died around 1940 or 1941.  If you do not have anything to do with this family you do not have to respond, I understand. Thank you.

Hello,

I'm trying to find someone that can help us with the history of Carver Lane. It is still a one lane country road that I believe was once an old horse and buggy trail judging by the large embankments on the sides of the road. The Hessey family cemetary sits on top of the hill just to the east of Carver Lane and dates back to the early 1800's.
I'm concerned that our old lane could possilbly be considered for widening to a 2 lane road due to the proposed 450 home development at
the end of our road. Our road would probably be a last resort for access to this development because the property borders an existing 2 lane road (Guill Rd.) But it was mentioned at a recent planning commission meeting as a way to relieve traffic on Guill. There's not many of these old horse and buggy lanes left and I think that it is important to preserve
this history.
Any information relating to the history of this area would be very much appreciated!

Thanks,
Jason Baker

Saw your name on USGenNet, hoping you can help me.
My
great-great-great grandfather was William J. Phillips.
He was born Feb. 11, 1844. I believe his middle name
to be Jasper. He was a wagonmaker in Clarksville. Here
is my problem. I can find him on the 1860 census; I
have his parents, and his children. But I cannot find
him on the 1870 census, and I do not know his wife's
name. His daughter was Eula Mae Coleman Phillips, born
in 1872. She married Joseph Manton Jarrell, who also
was a wagonmaker, and may have gotten his company from
William, as William had no sons. That is also why
Eula's middle name was Coleman, after her grandfather,
Coleman Phillips. Do you have any idea about who his
wife may have been, and why I can't find him on the
census? I know he was there; it seems a bit odd to me.

Hey there - I am actually a descendent of John Thomas Brooksher who was married to Maggie Mae Cooper.

According to my grandmother, this is how our lineage plays out:

Joe Cooper married Margaret Laine (I think it says Mary Smith on your website) and they had children, one of which was Maggie Mae Cooper.

Maggie Mae Cooper married John Thomas Brooksher and they had 8 children:
Joe
Tillman
Mason
Omer
Audie Lee (my great grandfather)
LulaBelle
Harlin
Buster (John)

Audie Lee Brooksher married Lila McNeil (my great grandmother) and they had children.

One of their kids is my grandmother, Margaret Brooksher Boyer (who married Emmette Malcolm Boyer - he went by Malcolm E. Boyer)

I just wanted to let you know it was Margaret Laine that he married so that you would have correct information.

If you by chance have any other information on John Thomas Brooksher I would appreciate the assistance.  Thanks!

I do not have enough info on my Mullen/Mullin/Mullins line to go back beyond Green Mullins in Smith County, TN.  No siblings, no parents, nothing I can trace back with at this point.  And to beat all, he 'died and was buried at the poor farm cemetery' in Smith County, TN.

Good luck and let me know if you suceed..

Nancy Goodman

I have just begun to try to trace my side of the Lynch
family and have been having quite a time.  I received the following info
from the Mormon Church site.
