I then went to Cardinal Hayes High School on the Grand Concourse and 151st Street. I played clarinet and trumpet in the schood band there in my freshman year. I was a member of the Camera Club there, since I was very interested in photography. I shot in black & white and developed my own film. The club's moderator was a Xaverian Brother. His name was at first Br. Arnold John Houlihan. Brother Arnold and the other Xaverians were very much into student activities. Brother Arnold and the Science department hosted a school bus ride to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia each spring. At Brother Arnold's insistence, I volunteered at the Cardinal Hayes Center for Special Education. This was a program where one gave time to be a big brother or sister to a retarded person. The program was every other Sunday afternoon at the school. Over the years I was a big brother to three different youngsters. I very much enjoyed my participation in this program. It gave me a very good view on the hardships that other people and families have to deal with everyday. In my senior year at Hayes, I got a job in the schools athletic office working for the director - Bernie Gallagher. The job was a combination bookeeper and secretary for the Catholic High Schools Athletic Association. I helped schedule inter school track and field meets, basketball and baseball games as well as swimming competitions. I collected the entry fees, organized the competions and scored the events. The job also included helping out at various social functions sponsored by the CHSAA. Every year there was the Monsignor Peters Scolarship Fund Dinner and the Annual Hayes Games Dinner. This job more than helped pay my way through college. Bernie Gallagher was one of the best boss's I've ever had. I went to Iona College in New Rochelle, NY. I was an accounting major and graduated with two majors: Accounting and Business Law. My first real job was as a Junior Accountant at an advertising agency. Dancer Fitzgerald Sample, Inc. My office was at 347 Madison Avenue. |
