KATE VS TORI
Published in 'Q' Magazine issue 140 May 1998.
"I'll never forget the first time I heard about Kate," Amos recalls. "I
was playing in a club, I was 18 or 19 and somebody came up to me, pointed
their finger and said, Kate Bush. I went, Who's that? I wasn't really
familiar because Kate didn't really happen in the States until Hounds Of
Love. I was shocked because the last thing you want to hear is that you
sound like someone else. Then people kept mentioning her name when they
heard me sing, to the point where I finally went and got her records. When
I first heard her, I went, Wow, she does things that I've never heard
anybody do, much less me. But I could hear a resonance in the voice where
you'd think we were distantly related or something."
So you were never influenced directly by her?
"Well... I must tell you that when I heard her, I was blown away by
her. There's no question."
Did you sing along with the records?
"Absolutely. But I knew that I had to be careful, so I didn't voraciously
learn her catalogue. I left the records with my boyfriend at the time,
because I didn't want to copy her." - Tori Amos

Maybe Tori's parents were Kate fans. Is that where it all began?

Random Information
- In Kate's song "The Sensual World" not only does she say "Mmm yes" throughout the song, at one point she even says "Mmm yes, I said, Mmm yes". You can hear a sample of Sensual World on the page found here. As far as Tori, listen to "Raspberry Swirl" or pretty much any song and you can hear it.
- Tori's second album is called Under the Pink. Kate has a b-side called "Under the Ivy".
- In Kate's song "Cloudbusting" the chorus starts "Every time it rains, you're here, in my head". Tori has a b-side called "Here. In My Head".
- Kate has a song called "Get Out Of My House". Tori had a song called "Get Out Of My Garden", but changed the title to "Datura" (i wonder why), but she still says "hey, yeah, get out of my garden" throughout the song.
- Kate has a song called "Hello Earth". Tori has a song called "Hey Jupiter"
- Listen to the intro to Kate's "Waking the Witch" then to Tori's intro to "Not the Red Baron".
- In Tori's song "Girl", there is a male voice at one point in the song that says "Sit in the chair and be good now". Similarly, in Kate's song "The Fog", there is a male voice that says "Just put your feet down child, cuz you're all grown up now." Although the lyrics aren't the same, the context in which they're used in the song are very much alike.
- Speaking of fathers, in Tori's song "Winter" Tori sings about white horses. The line is "All the white horses have gone ahead". In Kate's song "And Dream of Sheep", Kate sings "And if you find me racing white horses.."
- Kate has a song called "My Lagan Love". The melody of the song is a traditional English song, but the lyrics are original. It's an acapella song. Reminds me of Tori's "Song for Eric".
- "In Search of Peter Pan" - Kate Bush - 1978. "Operation Peter Pan" - Tori Amos - 2002.
- I will have a picture when I can find a clip of "Suspended in Gaffa", but in this video Kate is spinning around in space, much like Tori in the video for "Cornflake Girl".. oh and "Caught A Lite Sneeze" too.
- Tori's video for "Pretty Good Year" may very well be a tribute to Kate Bush. The style in which the video is shot is very KT-esque. The only difference is that the shots of Tori are about 1 second each because well, she can't dance, and she's obviously had no theatrical training. First her music, then her lyrics, then her videos and photo shoots, now her DANCING?! WHEN WILL YOU STOP TORI!?!?! WHEN!!
- Kate Bush - The Big Sky vs. Y Kant Tori Read - "The Big Picture". These song structures are very similar, even some of the lyrics are. What makes me laugh is the similarity between the 2 breakdowns at the end of the songs. Even the back up singers!
Kate - Gaffa
Tori - HIMH
Kate - Babooshka
Tori - Dent
