ONION HAT
Dear fellow knitters,
Well, here's my christmas gift to the net.... It's the famous onion hat...
Here in Idaho, we have an onion farmer for a governor, and so this is
pretty appropriate.. The pattern is loosely based on the famous fruit caps,
but the idea is my own, at least until I give it to you all.
The Onion Hat
for tots or toddlers
Materials
about 1/2 skein or so of olive green worsted
1 skein worsted weight creme yarn (I used Wool Ease, creme)
1 skein either brown, yellow, white or burgundy mohair (depends on
it is a yellow, dirty, white or red onion) The mohair makes it
fuzzy and
papery, sort of like onion skin.
circular needle size 8, 16inch
set of double points size 8
Directions
Cast on 72 (80) stitches using the creme and the mohair as a double
strand. Join circle. Knit in the round, continuing using the creme and
the mohair together. I make the hat approximately 5-6 inches tall before I
start the decreases. But do whatever looks nice to you. It's helpful to
try it on a tot as you are knitting to get the right height. After height
completed start decreases. First decrease row, knit two together every 7th
stitch, then one row even, then knit two together every 6th stitch, then
one row even. Continue in this pattern until you have approximately 16
stitches left on the needles(you have probably changed to double point by
this time. Change to olive green color, and finish the shaping
(decreasing) until you have four stitches. Now you need to make an I cord
out of the these remaining 4 stitches. Does everyone know how to do this?
I will attempt to explain... Knit four stitches on double points, do not
turn work, bring yarn to the back and knit the same four stitches again,
over and over until it makes a cord about 6 inches long...
Bind off.Now make two or three more I-cords out of the olive green yarn.
Insert these two I cords into the top of the hat, you kind of have to pry
them in, and sew in place. (the I cords make the scallion part)
Weave in all loose ends.
Thats it....
If anyone has technical questions, e-mail me privately, and I will attempt
to answer.
this could also be a radish, with red yarn, or a garlic.
I made my nephew one of these, and he wore it once, the next time I saw
him, he had a different hat on, and I said "What happened to the onion"
Well, my SIL said, "sold it to a yuppie mom at preschool for $20", and
handed me the $20. She is obviously not a knitter, but the $20 was
welcome....
Enjoy,
Merry Merry Christmas, and Happy Thanksgiving...
