Cellphone tower surprises
Blue Mountain BC residents

Neighbours Steve Hamvai and Mike Duplissie say they should have been consulted prior to the placement of a cell tower in a residential area.

By Phil Melnychuk - Staff Reporter

Neighbours on Blue Mountain are rallying to oppose a cellphone tower that's been plunked into their midst.
And they're blaming the District of Maple Ridge for letting it happen.
Mike Duplissie has been living on 272nd Street at 122nd Avenue for about three years. Recently, he saw a truckload of steel beams in the area, only to find they've been assembled into a 70-metre tower.

Cellphone tower stays
Blue Mountain residents are struck with the Rogers cellphone tower because the District of Maple Ridge took no action during the licensing stage. While federal regulations encourage cities or towns to consult residents in order to find the best locations, the district doesn't have a policy to ensure that takes place.
"I think it's safe to say we learned a lesson from this," Coun. Craig Speirs said Wednesday. "This is not a good scene for the neighbourhood." Rogers Wireless received a building permit last September to build the 45-metre monopole. The tower was completed a few weeks ago on a private lot in the 12200-block 272nd Street.

She has to live in caravan
by Don Mackay

A Woman has been forced to turn her back on the 21st century - because she's allergic to electricity. Petra Smith lives in a caravan in the Welsh countryside, with a wood burning stove and battery-powered lights, because she suffers from electrical hypersensitivity.
She suffers panic attacks and her skin becomes itchy if she gets close to electrical appliances. She said: 'The most traumatic thing has been having to completely alter my social life. 'Friends either visit me or they have to switch off all their appliances if I go to see them.'
Campaigners say the condition affects 35 per cent of the UK population to some degree.
