Media Center Goals
 
My number one goal for the Library Media Center is for children to be comfortable in their library while they learn how to use the Library Media Center's resources independently.   
 
 Following are grade-level guides to the skills we work on in the Library Media Center:

Library/Information Literacy Skills:

A.  The library as a reading and research place

 3.  Learning/following library rules

Parts of a Book:
A.  The PEOPLE:
      author, illustrator, publisher, title, copyright, copyright date

B.  The BOOK:
      spine, cover, pages, dust jacket

C.  Library Books:
     Borrower card, book pocket, date due slip, call number

Literature:
A.  Genres:
     folktales, fairy tales, Mother Goose, holiday books, animal books, series books
B.  Listening to a story, taking turns when talking about a story
C.  Fiction/Non-Fiction
D.  Characters, setting, parts of a story, plot

Technology Skills:
A.  Use an audiocassette player
B.  Identify Parts of a computer:  Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, CD-ROM, Disk, CPU
C.  Responsible equipment care/use (good posture, clean hands, proper handling)
D.  Using a CD-ROM drive (loading, unloading, putting CD-ROM in proper place)
E.  Pointer/Mouse control
F.  Logging into computer independently
G.  Introduction to names/uses of following keys: letters, numbers, arrows, backspace, spacebar
H.  Learn proper way for startup and shut down of computer
I.   Understand icons and menus (appropriate use of pull down menus, double clicking to
      open applications)
J.   Learn and use tools of a drawing program (KidPix, WriteAlong)
K.  Create a document, save it and edit it on another occasion
L.  Be able to issue a Print command from a word processing program
M. Be able to open and exit programs

D.  Characters, setting, parts of a story, plot
E.  Beginning, Middle, and End parts of a story
F.  More figurative language: paradox, irony, overstatement, understatement, poetry forms
 

Technology Skills:
A.  Identify Parts of a computer:  Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, CD-ROM, Disk, CPU, cursor,
     scroll, open, menu bar, program, maximize, minimize, link) and demonstrate the basic functions
     of each term.
B.  Responsible equipment care/use (good posture, clean hands, proper handling)
C.  Using a CD-ROM drive (loading, unloading, putting CD-ROM in proper place)
D.  Pointer/Mouse control
E.  Logging into computer independently
F.  Introduction to names/uses of following keys: letters, numbers, arrows, backspace, spacebar
     and developing two-handed keyboarding skill
G.  Learn proper way for startup and shut down of computer
H.  Understand icons and menus (appropriate use of pull down menus, double clicking to
      open applications)
I.   Utilize a basic word processing program and format capabilities (font and text size); saving and
     retrieving files; use of menu options (cut and paste, thesaurus, etc.). and execution of the Print
     command.
J.  Learn and use tools of a drawing program (KidPix, WriteAlong) for self expression, building
    dexterity, and use in class projects
K. Create a document, save it and edit it on another occasion
L. Begin awareness of electronic communication and network possibilities

 review previous concepts and introduce Preface, Foreword, Index, Glossary, Bibliography

Literature:
A.  Genres:  Newbery Award winners, tall tales, folklore from around the world and the U.S., seasonal,
      biography, poetry (incl: simile , metaphor, onomatopoeia, and personification)
B.  Listening to a story, taking turns when talking about a story
C.  Fiction/Non-Fiction  - difference between and arrangement in library
D.  More figurative language: paradox, irony, overstatement, understatement, poetry forms

Technology Skills:
A. Expand appropriate use of technology terms as the student develops new software program capabilities, including on-line resources (e.g. search engines, keywords, Boolean searching, bookmarks, "print preview").
B. Demonstrate how to cite on-line sources properly when such information is used in school projects.
C. Increase proficiency of two-handed word processing. (Proficiency Goal = 12 Words per minute with 85+% Accuracy). Use appropriate function keys (e.g. F1 = Help). Be able to save and retrieve from disks.
C. Create a multimedia presentation with teacher assistance, which incorporates moving, copying and exporting graphics and text between programs.
D. Operate a video camera, scanner, and digital camera.
E. Interact with electronic communities for purposes of information gathering and research.
F. Learn how to evaluate information from electronic databases and communities.
