A little background information…

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Linda Gran. I was born in Brooklyn, NY, graduated from Pratt Institute, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. I now reside in upstate NY. My work has been exhibited in numerous New York area galleries and museums, including Soho, and Woodstock, NY.

 "An Artist's Statement… Why I paint"

"Painting is a magical experience. It is the expression of the deepest and most private level of consciousness, the internal over the external, the symbolic over the factual. To be creative involves the highest form of the intellect on one plane and the primitive or primal self on another. It is the expression of truth, joy, sadness, and humor.

Art is not isolated from the rest of the world. It is constantly involved with a complex interplay of ideas, especially with the other arts: music, literature, philosophy, and psychology.

I feel that artists have a creative connection with the world and are not limited by time and space. They are dreamers with a higher level of consciousness, transcending the commonly descriptive as well as the overtly logical.

An artist has to challenge the existing belief system. Art must not express a certain taste or trend and has the duty to disregard public opinion. It must be sincere and have value in the world.

The artist must respond with a new rhythm, not derived from their subject but from its sensation. In each painting I want a specific atmosphere. I work layer upon layer to create luminosity, an inner light or energy. I work mostly symbolically, giving the viewer (with the help of a title), a chance to bring themselves to the painting.

For me, painting has to be above all the search for the spiritual. I want to share the beauty and the darkness, the ambivalent nature of life. I am looking for the deeper layers of mystery, that which makes up the world in its innermost being. I feel the meaning lies in the ambiguity. "

My work has been favorably reviewed in several publications:

Liam Nelson, Art critic of the Kingston Freeman said, "Her exhibition is in fact a magical experience. To enter the gallery is to enter a world crowded with strange exotic creatures, tantalizingly ambiguous shapes that touch our feelings. Her work communicates with the inner world of others, and in a valid and entertaining way succeeds in communicating her celebration of life."

E.C. Lipton of Artspeak, Soho N.Y. said, "Linda Gran creates bold forms that command the entire canvas in pictorially striking ways. This is no easy achievement and it attests to her command of form in painting. Her canvases are dynamic and vigorous, with an unusual personal color and a pervading sense of magic."

"Talking Bird", as pictured above, is only one of many of Linda's work. At this time we invite you to visit her on line gallery by clicking on the below links: We will be incorporating her other works into this site, so please stop back often!
