
When Jewel was still struggling for recognition, she toured incessantly and
found herself at a number of small venues. I saw her open for Goth god Peter
Murphy in Indianapolis at the Vogue in August, 1995. After her brief set, she
escaped through the stage door; I followed her into the parking lot, where we
chatted for a few minutes and she signed a poster and my copy of Pieces of You.
At the time, having an Internet fan base was a novelty to her, and she conveyed
her best wishes to the online folk. Later, of course, she acknowledged us in
a way that few performers ever would -- by treating us to a wonderful evening
