Castles, Stone Circles, and Other Ancient Monuments
Beeston Castle
If you have bookmarked this site, please be advised that it has been replaced by
a new home page at Castles
as of September 1998. This page will be retained but not updated in the future. This
decision was made because technology for web-page layout has advanced, and also, I just got
tired of the appearance of this site. That nauseating pumpkiny background color, for one thing, has to go!
Please visit the revised site and let me know what you think: Reply.
Unfortunately, this will not work unless you have a Version 4 browser.
British Castles
You could say I was obsessed on the subject of
castles and prehistoric stone circles. Here is a selection of some of my favorite
links to sites on the Internet that are relevant in these areas, also some
annotated lists of castles and other things.
These sections are pretty much all related to the British Isles, mainly because that is my area of experience; most of the places described in these lists have been personally visited.
The contents of these pages are personal opinions; I am responsible for any factual errors or just plain wrong-headedness, so please feel free to e-mail me at:
*Grobius*.
I will add more of my pictures to this from time to time. (June 1997: added some more --easiest way is to open the Picture Gallery if you don't want to wade through my text pages. June 1998: A new picture gallery in another
format.)
NEW:
Jun 1998 -- Picture Gallery (Netscape Navigator only)
Jan 1998 -- Walled Towns in Britain
Apr 1998 -- Keeps and Towers
Apr 1998 -- Bolsover Castle

I guess the best way to do this is to go alphabetically by country
rather than regionally by county (there are just so many, and it's hard
to arrange a tour that takes them in by proximity).

GOOD OLD PLACES AND CURIOSITIES
This Web Page is Grobius Shortling's list of some unusual places
in Great Britain -- Stately Homes, Museums, Natural Wonders, etc. It is pretty
much a random selection, by no means as comprehensive as the Castle Pages.

DINOSAURS OF THE SEA
![[Ocean Liners]](images/oldships.gif)
OCEAN LINERS (yes, I consider them Ancient Monuments, to the
extent that they survive in some form or another -- not these stupid floating Holiday
Inns that pass for ships these days)
LINKS
-
QUEEN MARY My own page, but it links to others (great ship before
they turned it into a hotel)
-
TITANIC (1) Technical stuff, really nice graphics (lesson in web page design)

TITANIC (2) RMS Titanic: Her passengers and crew -- a good Titanic

AND THE REST (Normandie, etc.) A Fantastic Source for devotees on this
subject
Note: This was a great site, but it has disappeared (checked Feb 98). Does
anybody know where it moved to, or is it now just defunct? If you know, please
tell me by e-mail.
[Note: An Australian Titanic Web Page --
"http://www.netpacific.com.au/titanic/" --
which I liked a lot, has disappeared; the dreaded "URL not found" message, not
uncommon these days, appears; does anybody know if it moved?]
The last survivor of Titanic, Edith Haisman, died at the age
of 100 on January 22, 1997.

Revisions to this page:Feb 1997: The HTML page
that was selected as Castle Site of the Week on 'Castles.Org' was much too large
and has been split up into smaller pages for easier access, and I have also added
some of my photographs (I apologize for the poor resolution of the photographs;
they were scanned as 72 dpi bitmap images from standard prints, but I don't know
about this stuff -- the pictures were obviously better, and even look OK in Windows,
but get 'pixilated' on the Internet). In the future, as finances permit, since it is expensive
to scan pictures as computer images using a commercial service (Kinko's), I will add
more of them as clickable GIF's. Some of the pictures have a 'hot spot' that will link
directly to the appropriate reference (move your mouse around until it changes shape, then
click). The site has been optimized for Netscape Navigator, so it might not look the same
if you use another Web Browser (looks lousy in Webcrawler, for example, but OK in
Internet Explorer).
Another technical note: This site contains features that you need an advanced Web Browser
to utilize (Navigator or Explorer versions 3 or above), but the bare bones should work on any
browser. Contains Animated GIF's, JavaScript, and Frames. There are also normal HTML links,
so you should be able to access anything here via alternative methods, hence the redundancy
of controls.
Mar 1997: Page split up into separate URL's.
Apr 1997: Picture Gallery added.
May 1997: JavaScript Shortcut Menu created; some redesign; additional pictures.
May 1998: Gradually converting all (most) of the graphics to thumbnails that can be clicked on to enlarge. The web pages were taking an unconscionable time to load up, and I want to add more
pictures. Having the enlargeable pictures will do them more justice, supposing you want to look at them.
June 1998: Another picture gallery added (same pictures, but
a different way of viewing them). Only works with Netscape
Sept 1998:Time for a change. This web site is old as such things go, so it is being redesigned for more advanced browers
(and also just because I got tired of the old appearance). The current page will be kept as a bookmark, but please go to Castles for all the updates to this site.
