As part of the annual Polishtown, USA festival the GT Express organized an attempt to break the Guiness Book of World Records entry for the biggest Chicken Dance, which it lists as 48,000 dancers at an Octoberfest in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1996. Despite tremendous excitement and support, the attempt to break the record just missed, falling short by only 47,680 dancers. But the level of enthusiasm was very high and all of the Chicken Dancers made a great effort in the 96 degree heat. Dancers ranged in age from 1 to 81 years old and came to participate from as far as Santa Monica, California. In fact, a world's record may have been set for the longest Chicken Dance, with the attempt lasting over 25 minutes, as the band waited for more dancers to join in.
When asked about the experience afterward, Tom Luebke of the GT Express, vocalist on their recorded version of the Chicken Dance, could reply only with a feeble "Cluck, cluck, cluck!" (He has since recovered his human voice). When band member Vince Barreca was asked how he felt afterwards, he threw himself on the ground and began pulling out his feathers. As an unexpected side benefit, however, egg laying production has increased 47%.
The GT Express has said they will make another attempt at the record in the Summer of 1998. Check back at their Web Page often for news and details.
