Gullah/Geechee Nation Overview
The Gullah/Geechee Nation exist off the southeastern seaboard of North America. It encompasses the Sea Islands and the Lowcountry. This internationally recognized nations homeland boundaries begin at Jacksonville, North Carolina and proceed southward to Jacksonville, Florida.
The Gullah/Geechees are a uniques African ethnic group in the Americas that was formed during chattle enslavement of the TransAtlantic Slave Trade. The numerous ethnic groups of Africans that were enslaved from what is todays Angola region all the way to the Senegambia combined their languages and dialects to form the native tongue of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, Gullah. From contact with English speakers, Gullah speakers developed a pidgin or bridge language or dialect of the Gullah language which is called Geechee.
The people of the region are called Gullah and Geechee. They are ONE people! They are ONE Nation!
Just as other nations of the world, the Gullah/Geechee people have their own elected leaders which include a Chieftess who is Queen Quet (the official head-of-state, liasion, spokesperson, and head pun de body of the Gullah/Geechee Nation), a Wisdom Circle Council of Elders, and the Assembly of Representatives. They also have their own national flag which is depicted above and a Constitution which is excerpted below.
The Gullah/Geechee people chose to use international human rights laws under which they are considered to be an ethnic and linguistic minority in order to stand on their human right to self-determination and to official declare themselves as a nation. In order to continue the sustainability of their nation, economic development and negotiations with other nations including the United States, African, and Caribbean nations are a consistent focus of the Gullah/Geechee Nation.
The Gullah/Geechee Nation thanks you for being here or for coming to this site (as was stated in Gullah as the title for this section) because that shows your interest in supporting the continued existence of this nation. Tenk hunnuh fa cum an tenk hunnuh change shiny ting wid wi!

In the tradition of our foreparents we will record in written from OURSTORY as a living testament to our Gullah/Geechee legacy. WE will also broaden our continuum through the use of electronic and video and audio means of documentation. Through the excercise of our human/minority rights, we will be the keepers of this material as we accpet the responsibilities of defining ourselves and our ancestors.

With these goals in mind, Gullah/geechee peoples take formal recognition of their nation and their human right to self-determination within the context of their minority governance rights, and thereby the Gullah/Geechee Wisdom Circle by its hands, spirit and soul undertakes the task of creating and ratifying the First Constitution of the Gullah/Geechee Nation.
Gullah/Geechee Nation Constitution:
PREAMBLE
In homage to our ancestors, under the guidance of our Creator, and for the generations to come, in Spirit and in TRUTH, we the Gullah/Geechee Nation hereby declare that we are a Nation.
The Gullah/Geechee acknowledge that our ancestors include Gola, Angolan, Gidzi, and Kissee people from which our name has been derived. These people came to the New World through entry points on the Atlantic seaboard and began the sharing of the land with those who are our indigenous American ancestors that first dwelled on and cultivated this land. We recognize that coming together of these and other African peoples in order to form the Gullah/Geechee communities of the Sea Islands on the eastern seaboard of the United States of America and thirty miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean in what is now the Carolinas, Georgia, and Northern Florida. This is the homeland for the Gullah/Geechee Nation as it is the land on which the traditions and cultures of Gullah/Geechee people have been formed.
Gullah includes the people, history, language, culture and Geechee is the descendant of this. Gullah is the native tongue and pure language and Geechee is the creolization of the language in which loan words from other languages are used as the Gullah/Geechee people continue to interact with those that speak other languages. It exist as a part of the Gullah/Geechee tradition and culture. This language which is a mixture of several languages. It is also a code of the spirit. Through our language, Gullah/Geechee people continue to hold our traditions orally.
WE recognize that nations were destroyed in the attempt to build a state dominated by other nations in which we were to be used as the tools to build said nation for the benefit of those other than ourselves. However, we hereby declare that we are living institutions that have retained our Africanisms. WE remain strong willed, determined people blessed by God as our foreparents were.
WE, the Gullah/Geechee Nation, in the excercise of our internationally-recognized right as a people to self-determination, do hearby give unto ourselves and our posterity this Constitution in order to proclaim our existence to the nations of the world, to achieve genuine social dignity, to protect our culture, to promote our right to develop in a manner in keeping with our heritage, principles and aspirations, and to consolidate the institutional framework of our Nation.
