Dictionary and Glossary

This is the 1992 Edition of the Zhodani-Galanglic Dictionary and Glossary (with a few additional entries; looking at a document for the first time in a while allows new connections to be made). The purpose of this document is to compile all known Zhodani words (as opposed to names), determine meaning where possible, and use the meaning to derive further information (like Library Data) from existing information. Definitions and translations given here may be used for the naming of ships and other vehicles, and for the generation of planetary Library Data based on world name (if they named it "sandy" for instance, the nature of the planet is easier to guess at).
This document will be updated as often as necessary, to reflect our growing knowledge of the Zhodani language. To this end, all readers are requested to pass along any Zhodani words to which they have attached a definition, whether it be a physical description or actual translation. With the official sources exhausted (or nearly so), this document can only expand with help from the Traveller-playing public.
Personal names and world names will not be entered into this document. These words are on file elsewhere (in sector listings), or have no place in this document unless translated. If a world name has been partially translated, it may be added to this document to aid in the translation of the rest of the name and other related words. Subsector names will be included where known, and sector names are already part of the document. World names from obscure sources will also be listed.
This document already includes all Zhodani words to appear in print THAT I KNOW OF. This includes the following sources: Alien Module 4 (Zhodani); MT Referee's Companion; Adventure 12: Secret of the Ancients; 101 Vehicles; FASA's Adventure Class Ships Volume 1 & 2; FASA's ZISMV-Vlezhdatl; Every issue of JTAS, Challenge, and Traveller's Digest so far published; Security Leak #5; FASA's Ordeal by Eshaar, Legend of the Sky Raiders and Trail of the Sky Raiders; Games Workshop's IISS Ship Files; and the Internet's Traveller Mailing List. If you are aware of a published source not mentioned here or in the body of the Dictionary, please pass along any relevant words for inclusion.
Words with a meaning or definition are rare enough without making distinctions between official and unofficial sources. Whether or not you support the use of the term at its source, it has a meaning of some sort which may aid in the translation or discovery of other words, and that is enough.
Each entry is credited by source. If no credit is given, the word either has numerous sources, is not a Zhodani word (but is closely related), or is original with this document (being derived from other translations). Group credit is given where specifics are unknown.
GRAMMAR:
We do not yet know enough to construct a realistic model of Zhodani grammar. A few guesses have been made regarding verb usage and adverbs. The verb root form was defined many years ago (in "Expedition to Zhodane" and JTAS #17, p 46) as a base + (e').
Verb Usage: Terms following a verb particle modify the verb. Thus Adre' ("to
grasp") and Adrtletlvra ("to grasp silently") or Adrnad ("a person
who grasps" ). Terms preceeding a verb particle are modified by the verb (and
its modifiers). [no example to date]. This scheme may (WILL)
eventually prove to be unworkable or too simple.

Abrstia - A domesticated animal native to Zhdant. Analogous to the Terran chicken, but providing a fibrous feather that can be woven into cloth. (Alien Module 4: Zhodani)
Achtiabr - Trans: unknown. Something of unspecified type to be wary of. (Referee's Companion; page 93)
Addaxur - (non-Zhodani word) A major client race of the Zhodani. (Alien Module 4: Zhodani)
Adrablsish - The inner-most world (orbit 0) of the Zhdant system. (Alien Module 4: Zhodani)
Adriantkev - Subsector J of Zhdant sector. (William Dover; Zhdant Sector Analyst)
Adre' - Trans: "to grasp" or "to grab". Assumes that some force is involved.
Adrnad - Trans: "grasper" or "a person who grasps". Has come to apply to hoarders and miserly individuals. Related to "Pradrnad" (an individual with the Telekinesis ability).
Adrtletlvra - Trans: "Silent Grasp". (101 Vehicles; #26)
Afachtiabr - Name of sector 1 rimward and 1 trailing of Zhdant sector. Part of this sector is within the Consular Province of Iadr Nsobl. Imperial designation: Far Frontiers. (Alien Module 4: Zhodani)
Akljats - Supersector from 3100 to 3300 parsecs coreward of Zhdant. (Security Leak #5)

At- - prefix to denote "season of" or "time of." Seen in all or most of the seasonal names on Zhdant.
Ataniebl - Trans: "Harvest". "The season (on Zhdant) to harvest mature crops." (Alien Module 4: Zhodani).
Atchafser - Trans: "Waning". "A period when the hot summer weather breaks and tempers." (Alien Module 4: Zhodani).
Atkazdievl - A calendar date. Marks the date of the first Psionic Games. (Alien Module 4: Zhodani)
-atl - suffix to a noble's personal name indicating Social Standing B. (Alien Module 4: Zhodani)
Atlthequzastial - Trans: "Double Olympiad Day". See Thequzastial.
Atpaipr - Trans: "Thaw". Season of Zhdant. "The melting of winter ice and thawing of frozen ground." (Alien Module 4: Zhodani).
Atrint - Trans: "Raining". The season (on Zhdant) of spring rains and the planting of crops. (Alien Module 4: Zhodani)
Atshtiavl - Trans: "Chill". "The freezing winter season" (on Zhdant). (Alien Module 4: Zhodani).

Cronor - Incorrectly labelled as the Zhodani spelling for Chronor (Spinward Marches 0304). The Zhodani language has no "Cr". The Zhodani spelling is probably "Kronor" or "Chronor". (Adventure 6: Expedition to Zhodane)

Dleqiatsz - A native of Dleqiats. (Referee's Companion)
Dlolprikl - An ancient city on the continent of Dleqiats on Zhdant. Once the capital of the Moon-Worshiping Empire (Viepchakliastie). (Alien Module 4: Zhodani)
Doruva - Trans: something-"light". As the Zhodani language has no "u", this word is probably misspelled or archaic. Ship name. A member of the "Light" class of Patrol Frigates. (Adventure 4: Leviathan)
Dranzhrin - Trans: "Sunbright". Zhdant holiday of the vernal equinox. "The point when days and nights are of equal length. Dranzhrin is also New Year's Day and takes place between Atpiapr and Atrint." (Alien Module 4: Zhodani).
Dranzhrinatch - Trans: "Sunflight". "The autumnal equinox; the point when days and nights are of equal length. Dranzhrinatch is a melancholy time for the commemoration of the dead. Dranzhrinatch takes place between Vrienstial and Atchafser." (Alien Module 4: Zhodani).
Dravr - Name of sector 4 trailing of Zhdant sector. Vargr designation: Tuglikki. (Alien Module 4: Zhodani)

Dzagtlas - Trans: "Great Death". Another name for the Viepchakl Plague of -7950. (Ed Schmitt)
Dzhagak - A large carrion-eating flying creature native to Zhdant. Spelling suspect (Zhodani has no "g", and the "dzh" sequence is also non-zhodani.) This could be a Vargr corruption of the original word, which is unknown. (Ordeal by Eshaar; FASA)
-e' - Regular ending for Zhodani verbs. Usually dropped if the verb is modified in some way. An additional glottal stop is added if the verb root ends with an 'e'. Thus Klie'e'.

Gaval - Subsector H of Zhdant sector. The name is either of truly ancient derivation (since Zdetl has no 'g'), or this is an Imperial misspelling of 'Qaval'. (Adventure 12: Secret of the Ancients)
Homo Zhdatl - (hybrid word) Galanglic term for a primitive ancestor of the Zhodani. Translates as "Learning Man". (Alien Module 4: Zhodani)
Homo Vlastebr - (hybrid word) Galanglic term for a primitive ancestor of the Zhodani. Translates as "Superior Man". (Alien Module 4: Zhodani)
Homo Zhdotlas - (hybrid word) Galanglic term for modern Zhodani. Translates as "Supreme Man". (Alien Module 4: Zhodani)
Iabrensh - One of the provinces of the Zhodani Consulate. "This province has been a major center of ship construction, primarily in support of expansionist activities to coreward." (Alien Module 4: Zhodani).

IAD - The initials of a Zhodani corporation which builds (among other things) robots. (Book 8: Robots)
Iadr - Trans: "Trailing" or "Following". (James Kundert)
Iadr Nsobl - One of the provinces of the Consulate. Makes up the Trailing and Rimward borders of the Consulate. (Alien Module 4: Zhodani)
Iadria Vlovl - A Zhodani sector-wide corporation which operates in Foreven sector. (Merchant Prince)

Jdiprzhdil - A large estate on Zhdant. (Expedition to Zhodane)
Jdistebr - Translation: "Wellborn". Old title corresponding to Social Standing C. Source of the current noble suffix "-stebr". (Alien Module 4: Zhodani)
Jianjshte - Subsector K of Tienspevnekr sector. (James Kundert; Tienspevnekr Sector Analyst)
Jirtodva - Trans: something-"light". Ship name. A member of the "Light" class of Patrol Frigates. (Adventure 4: Leviathan)

Kia - The name of a class of Zhodani military spacecraft (a fighter), nornally carried by the Stedlas SDB. (Adventure Class Starships Vol 1; FASA)

Kredl - An animal native to Zhdant which serves in a position analogous to Terran cattle. Domesticated by -30,000 (Imperial). (Alien Module 4: Zhodani)
Lenchiajzhdiezh - Subsector G of Yiklerzdanzh sector. Half of the Zhodani border state Miechntid Ibl lies within this subsector. (HIWG Australia)
Lienjqiets - Translation: "Swift Wind". The name of a Cruiser lost for 40 years. Its return caused the discovery of the precognitive abilities of the Biaq. (Alien Module 4: Zhodani)
Loyhva - Trans: something-"light". Spelling suspect (probably "Loiava"). Ship name. A member of the "Light" class of Patrol Frigates. (Adventure 4: Leviathan)
Makarin - A trading combine which operated in the trailing frontiers of the Zhodani Consulate between -2800 and -1800. (Traveller Alien Module 3: Vargr [pg 45, note 26])

Mekrashozh - Subsector M of Zhdant sector. (William Dover; Zhdant Sector Analyst)
Meqlemianz - The Consular province which makes up the spinward border of the Consulate. Highly settled and fairly peaceful. (Alien Module 4: Zhodani)
Mielrva - Trans: something-"light". Ship name. A member of the "Light" class of Patrol Frigates. (Adventure 4: Leviathan)
Moshie - Trans: "Misfit" or "that which does not fit". An uncomfortable concept to most Zhodani. (Traveller Mailing List v19; Scott Kellogg)
-nad - suffix "-er" (as in Tliaqrnad = miller). (Expedition to Zhodane)

Ninz - The name of a class of Zhodani military starship (a Scout/Courier). (Adventure Class Starships Vol 1; FASA)
Noql - Animal common to Zhdant, but transported there by the Ancients. An amphibious crawler, the noql is raised domestically in dammed streams. (Alien Module 4: Zhodani)
Obrefripl - A province of the Zhodani Consulate which consists of "occasional worlds and groups of worlds (up to subsector-sized clusters) scattered between Zdiedeiant sector and Chtierabl sector. The province is primarily colonial in nature." (Alien Module 4: Zhodani).

Viezhzdi' Zhipr - A minor religious cult with adherents on several worlds in the rimward region of the Consulate. The cult is most notable for its vegetarianism and a strong reproductive urge. Because of the high birthrate within the cult, the Tavrchedle' occasionally encourage migrations to worlds beyond Consulate borders. The Tavrchedle' allow the cult to survive primarily due to the membership of some few members of the nobility, and because the cult is not at all militant. One of the more successful colonies is Yiezhzdi' Shtaf (Yiklerzdanzh 0137). Imperial sources refer to this cult as "Anti-Entropists". (HIWG Australia)

Vlazhdumecta - (non-Zhodani word) A minor human race thought to be from Afachtiabr sector, and absorbed by the Consulate millenia ago. The initial contact between the two races enabled the Vlazhdumecta to create a far reaching but short lived mercantile empire in Afachtiabr and Yiklerzdanzh.
