This page identifies known reenactment units representing components of Hood's Texas Brigade. Such units can be categorized into two categories based on full-time vs. part-time impression.
Full-time units have adopted a Hood's Brigade prototype as one their primary impressions. Co. H, 4th Texas is an example of such a unit. (We have to say "one of their impressions" because it is not uncommon for mature units to have multiple impressions. Again, using Co. H as an example, we also sometimes portray the 4th Ohio and, on rare occasions, the 10th Texas in the Tennessee army.) Part-time units portray a Hood's Brigade prototype only for a particular event (ex: 135th Sharpsburg or 135th Gettysburg). This table lists only units for which a Hood's Brigade prototype is one of their primary, full-time impressions.
Many, but not all, of the units listed on this page are participants in a semi-structured national organization, Hood's Texas Brigade, commanded by Gen. Jack King. This organization has been created to portray the Texas Brigade at major eastern 135th anniversary reenactments. Unfortunately, the choice of whether or not a unit joins, or is invited to join, this national movement has generally been a function of the Byzantine labyrinth of reenacting politics.
Co. H, 4th Texas believes that, in reenacting, the prototype unit should be a stronger bond that a local generic battalion affiliation. We believe that this view, while not dominant, is gaining broader support, and we point to the 14th New York State Militia and 26th North Carolina organizations as proof. Co. H strongly supports the goal of a permanent affiliation of units who do a full-time primary Hood's Brigade impression. At a minimum, we see this as an opportunity to exchange research information. Ultimately, we would like to see a situation in which these units are able to come together -- free of pressure and politics -- to portray Hood's Brigade at appropriate national events, while maintaining other battalion affiliations at local or non-Virginia army events. This, we believe, is a logical extension of the unit prototype. If you share this goal, contact us.
The history books tell us the South lost the war. If you take a look at the peacetime stations of the various units listed in these tables, that would not appear to be the case. In addition to the "depot" units back in Texas, we have "occupation" forces all over the U.S., and even a few companies in Europe fulfilling the Confederacy's commitments to NATO.
We are hopeful that this listing will be useful to groups wishing to activate new Texas Brigade units. All things being equal, reenacting etiquette says that you don't knowingly use prototype companies that other people have already chosen.
These tables identify all units with a primary, full-time Hood's Brigade impression which have been identified in the process of creating the Texas Brigade structure for 135th Sharpsburg. If your unit would like to be added to the listing, or if your listing needs to be updated, again, contact us!
