My Family Tree

If you are a descendant of this line, please submit to HaleRoots@aol.com

According to the book, Roots in Virginia (1948) by Nathaniel Claiborne Hale, John Hale Sr., "the Frontiersman" homesteaded on Bent Mountain in the Blue Ridge, later Roanoke, VA-- where the Staunton flows east out of the mountains at Big Lick gap. Other family members settled nearby on the Piedmont plateau. I don't have a date for John Hale's arrival at the western Virginia border, but "Roots" tells us: "In 1752, the County of Halifax was formed from Lunenburg for the convenience of the inhabitants in the fork between the Staunton and Dan Rivers. The western limits of the new county were the Blue Ridge Mountains dividing it from Augusta. There on Bent Mountain John Hale, was relatively an old resident. He had been listed several years earlier, with his neighbors of Augusta County about the headwaters of Little River and Back Creek, in Captain Martin’s Company for purposes of mutual defense against the Indians. The List of Souls, Tithes and Taxable Property in this company shows him as a slave owner and possessed of a quantity of livestock. John Hale, who was born about 1706, had probably left Tidewater from Baltimore County, Maryland, about 1727 and spent some years on the northwest frontier before joining the migration up the Shenandoah River."

The three published sources that I am aware of, claiming our John Hale Sr. was the son of Nicholas Haile II of the Tidewater branch are: Roots in Virginia by Nathaniel Hale Claiborne, "Ridge Runners" Vol. XI (1978) and Maude Crowe's book Descendants From First Families of Virginia and Maryland (privately printed, 1978). Although these sources give us tremendous insight, valuable information and quite convincing story connecting John Hale Sr. to the Tidewater, Maryland Hale/Haile/Heale's-- i.e. Nicholas Haile II3, George Haile2 and Nicholas Haile I1, the immigrant who came to Elizabeth City County, Virginia, in 1645-- John Hale Sr. is not mentioned in the will of Nicholas Haile II and they do not offer a reference for this claim. I think there may be a link but more research is needed. Until I find proof, I am leaving the Tidewater, Maryland branch off this report.

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN1 HALE, SR.1 was born Bet. 1706 - 17251, and died Aft. June 1793 in Franklin County, VA1. He married ELIZABETH1.

Notes for JOHN HALE, SR.:

Revolutionary War: John Hale "gave supplies". References: Kentucky Ancestors, vol.12-No.2, October 1976, Arlene Brachman and Kegley's Virginia Frontier, pg. 582.

The Henry Co., VA land records show John Hale Sr. sold land (which he received in 1783 as a grant) in Botetourt Co., June 1792. In that transaction he is listed as "of Franklin County". Witnesses were Thomas and Joseph Hale and William Campbell, son-in-law of Thomas Hale who married Jane Armstrong.

There is speculation as to whether John Hale Sr. had a brother and a son, William, and whether Thomas, Edward and Jesse were children of a brother William whom John Hale Sr. may have been caring for. There was a William Hale living in the area, possibly the same William Hale who was killed by Indians in 1774. (source: Hite Report; the Draper Papers doesn't say what happened to him)  Daughter, Hannah is speculative. Note: Edward, Thomas and Jesse each named a son William and no son named John. There is a William Hale in the area in the area in the 1780's, who got land in Fincastle Co., VA in 1776.  (Source:  Arlene Brachman).

Notes for EDWARD HALE:

Edward Hale, son of the Virginia settler, was born about 1750, and is described as a man of rather small stature, with fair complexion and blue eyes. He was a man unusually intelligent and well informed, and became a prominent figure on the border in his day. He served in the American army during the early period of the revolutionary war, and in 1779 came across the Alleghenies into the New River valley, settling on Wolf Creek. He was engaged in many fights and skirmishes with the Indians, and was one of the party under Captain Matthew Farley that followed the savages in 1783 after their attack on the family of Mitchel Clay, at Clover Bottom, on the Bluestone. He engaged in the skirmish with this party on Pond Fork of Little Coal River, killing one of the Indians at the first fire. From the back of this Indian a strip of skin was cut by William Wiley, one of the pursuers, which was used by Hale as a razor strop for many years, and kept thus in the family as a memorial of the occasion. During his service in the revolutionary war, he marched with Captain Shannon's company to North Carolina, in 1781, and was in the engagement at Wetzell's Mills, March 6th, and at Guilford's Courthouse, March 15th. He died about the year 1820, and his descendants have been among the most eminent citizens of the country. They have occupied prominent positions in civil and military affairs wherever they have made their homes, and have been conspicuous in all walks in life and in all trades and professions. They have been farmers, physicians, lawyers, merchants, magistrates, judges, and members of the legislature. As soldiers their records have been without blemish, and they have fought, bled, and died on nearly every important battlefield of the civil war.

In the year 1785, Edward Hale was married to Miss Patsy Perdue, a daughter of Uriah Perdue, who had then recently removed from what is now Franklin county, Virginia. Mrs. Hale was a sister of the wife of the elder Joseph Hare; it was after this marriage that the Hales removed to Wolf Creek. There was living in the year 1900, in Mercer county, one James Perdue, a descendant of the family of Mrs. Hale; he was at that time one hundred and one years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hale had the following children: 1. Thomas, married Miss Lucas, and had: Charles Edward; Lorenzo D.; Green; Thomas; Ralph; Priscilla, married William H. From Harrodsburg the regiment marched to Somerset KY and in January of 1862, was engaged for some time in destroying the entrenchments of Gen. Zollicoffer and collecting property at the battle of Mill Spring. I think Luther had the rank of Capt. at his discharge.

More on the 19th KY Infantry:

The 19th Ky, Infantry was recruited & organized at Harrodsburg [Mercer CO] Ky., in the fall of 1861, by Col. William J. Landrum & Lieut. Col. John Cowan & was mustered into service on the Jan. 2, 1862. They marched to Somerset, Ky. and engaged for some time in destroying the entrenchments of Gen. Zollicoffer and collecting property captured at the battle of Mill Springs. In April 1862 the regiment marched from Somerset to Cumberland Ford & assigned to Gen. Baird's brigade of Gen. George W. Morgan's division. It remained there until June & took part in the movements which resulted in the capture of Cumberland Gap. Sept. 1862 marched through the mountains of Eastern Ky to the Ohio River. Upon this march the troops suffered much for want of food subsisting chiefly upon meal grated upon the bottom of their mess pans.

The 19th was assigned to the division of the Army of Kentucky, commanded by Brig. Gen. A. J. Smith...marched to Memphis, Tenn. and formed part of Maj. Gen. Sherman's army which moved on Vicksburg via Chickasaw Bayou. Was in the battle of Chickasaw Bluffs 29 Dec. 1863. From there marched to Arkansas Post & participated in the battle which resulted in the capture of that place Jan. 10, 1863.

On the 15th of April 1863, the regiment marched down the east bank of the Mississippi river and crossed to the rear of Vicksburg, participating in the battles of Port Gibson, Champion Hills, Black River Bridge & the sieges of Vicksburg & Jackson. In the assault on Vicksburg on the 22nd of May, the 19th lost 60 in killed & wounded. The 19th was transferred to the Department of the Gulf and was with Gen. Banks on the unfortunate "Red River Campaign". At the battle of Sabine Crossroads, La, the 19th repelled five distinct charges before the enemy was enabled to break through it's lines. The losses in killed & wounded was high.

After the Red River expedition the 19th returned to Baton Rouge, La., where it remained until ordered to Louisville, Ky., where it was mustered out January 26, 1865. Col. W. J. Landram (of Garrard CO) was made a Brigadier-General in 1865.
