JUNE 1998 - MEMORY MONTH

I am calling June Memory Month for my patterns. So these two blocks are for all the people in your life who you forgot to tell, "I love you" to today. Remember life is short. In a twinkling of an eye our lives may be changed forever. Do not let that wonderful thing us shrinks call "Denial" impact your life to the degree that you believe you can put something off till tomorrow, or next month, or next year, because tomorrow just might not come. Then where would you be? Take time today to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you and how much you appreciate them. Start by finding just five minutes in your busy day to do the important things: Hug a child, visit a shut-in, or gather your family around the table for a time of pizza and sharing. You all know that old saying: "Yesterday is the past, Tomorrow is the Future and Today is the Present, that is why we call it a gift!" Use that gift on a daily basis my friends, because it leaves us so quickly.

SPRINGFIELD ROSE

May twenty-first I was visiting a good friend in Eugene, Oregon. I woke up with a bad respiratory infection and ended up having to go to the local hospital Emergency Room. It happened to be the same day a young man had taken several guns, shot his parents and 24 high school students from Thurston High School in Springfield, Oregon. Thirty minutes earlier half of the injured students had arrived at that same Emergency Room I was standing in. I became an observer, in horror, of crying and anxious parents looking for their children, the media circus that gathered outside the building with cameras rolling trying to catch a glimpse of all that was going on inside, and the calm efficient manner in which all hospital staff handled themselves. What I will remember, for the rest of my life, was the first thing I heard when I walked in there: The sound of someone crying in pain, physical pain.

Four people died as a result of this action. Two loving parents and two lovable students. In an effort to show support, the Springfield Fire Department started handing out blue ribbons to the community. The significance of the ribbon was "the hope for a brighter tomorrow". So here is a block for the families of those killed, the children injured, the one that still remain critically injured in the hospital, the high school staff and students and the people of Springfield. A blue ribbon for the hope of tomorrow and a white rose for the belief that the innocence of youth need not be lost completely because of the action of one. If you believe in prayers, say one now for all these people, then say one thanking God for your own loved ones.

FLYING HOME II

As you may know my Father died on May 3rd of this year. This block is for him. Flying Home was the title of the block I did for my brother when he died last year. You can still find that block in the Pattern archive if you are interested. This block was going to be a bird as well, a swallow, because my father loved to feed the birds at our home. After my mom died he started building and creating large bird feeders for them and actively watched the many different birds as they flew to and from our side yard. Somehow, in the wee hours of the night, as I worked on this pattern the swallows transformed into an airplane. Why you may ask, well I have a couple of ideas but I really do not know. He was a space engineer and loved the concept of flying and there are other reasons I can think of that I won't share here. But, I trusted my gut and this is for my Daddy Bear! Hope it brings you as much joy as he brought me!!!
