Books about Herpes

Managing Herpes : How to Live and Love with a Chronic STD, by Charles Ebel

  • This is a great classic book on Herpes, written by the Director of the Herpes Resource Center. Gives great information, and also discusses how to cope physically, emotionally, and romantically. A must for anyone who wants the facts.

The Truth About Herpes, by Stephen Sacks, MD

  • Another classic, written by one of the top Herpes experts in the world.

Dr. Ruth's Guide to Talking about Herpes, by Dr. Ruth Westheimer and Pierre A. Lehu

  • For over two decades, Dr. Ruth has been the most recognizable and influential sex expert in the world. Now she tackles how to deal with one of the most common and misunderstood sexually transmitted diseases: herpes. It is estimated that herpes has infected some sixty million people in the United States. By interviewing dozens of people with herpes who have gone through the process of overcoming guilt, shame, and the common misconceptions associated with herpes, Dr. Ruth speaks frankly and openly about: What herpes is, and the different kinds of herpes you can catch; The ways herpes can be transmitted; How to cope with the disease once you have it; Having that all-important "talk" about dealing with herpes with either a prospective lover or a longtime partner, and Joining a herpes support group (or starting one of your own). Dr. Ruth's Guide to Talking about Herpes also offers unique strategies on how to talk to your kids about herpes, and how herpes affects you if you're gay or an older adult. Finally, Dr. Ruth addresses how to talk about other sexually transmitted diseases with your partner or lover.

Understanding Herpes (Understanding Health and Sickness Series) by Lawrence Raymond Stanberry

Love, Medicine and Miracles, by Bernie Siegel, MD

  • Dr. Siegel presents a wonderfully different perspective on illness and conditions, and offers inspiration and hope for the future.

Spontaneous Healing, by Andrew Weil MD

  • Dr. Weil is one of the premier complementary practitioners - accepting both the traditional medical approach and alternative, natural, holistic methods. Dr. Weil believes that the body can heal itself. Spontaneous healing is not a miracle but a fact of biology--the result of the natural healing system that each one of us is born with. Drawing on fascinating case histories as well as medical techniques from around the world, Dr. Andrew Weil shows how spontaneous healing has worked to resolve life-threatening diseases, severe trauma, and chronic pain.

Books for Personal Empowerment and Creating a New Mindset

The Power of Intention, by Wayne W. Dyer

  • Another outstanding book – any of Wayne Dyer's work is sure to open your mind and heart to new possibilities. His current message about tapping into the power of intention may sound like good old positive thinking: just stay focused on what you want, rather than focusing on the lack of having what you want. But the teaching here goes deeper than just controlling thoughts (although he does acknowledge that thought control is a surprisingly challenging and significant endeavor).

Unlimited Power: A Black Choice, by Anthony Robbins and Joseph McClendon III

  • A new version of Tony's classic "Unlimited Power," co-written by Joseph McClendon with examples from the black experience. The principles and techniques apply to all races, creeds, colors, and viral types. A phenomenal book!

    Books on Relationships and Dating

Many of these books are written for Women, but Men would do well to read them, too!

He's Just Not That Into You: The No-Excuses Truth to Understanding Guys, by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo

  • One of the best and funniest new relationships books ever! It’s about staying true to who you are and what you want in a relationship, and not giving in to your own excuses for a man’s behavior. It’s provocative, hilarious, and, above all, intoxicatingly liberating. It deserves a place on every woman's night table. It knows you're a beautiful, smart, funny woman who deserves better. The next time you feel the need to start "figuring him out," consider the glorious thought that maybe He's just not that into you. And then set yourself loose to go find the one who is. After all, as Behrendt sensibly puts it, "if a (sane) guy really likes you, there ain’t nothing that’s going to get in his way." (Including - we say - Herpes!!!) If you’re not convinced yet, by all means read this smart, funny and surprisingly upbeat little book, full of q’s and a’s covering every excuse woman has ever made to avoid admitting to herself that a man just wasn’t that smitten with her.

Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, by John Gray PhD

  • The all-time classic book on why men and women think and behave the way they do. Also check out Gray’s other titles, especially:

Mars and Venus on a Date: A Guide for Navigating the 5 Stages of Dating to Create a Loving & Lasting Relationship, by John Gray PhD

  • This book is for all single people looking for love, including the newly separated or divorced who are daunted by re-entering the singles scene. Written with the compassion and understanding that could come only from John Gray, it takes readers through the five stages of dating: Attraction, Ambivalence, Commitment (to monogamy), True Intimacy and Proposal/Marriage. In its pages, readers will find creative ideas on finding a soulmate, making a commitment and sage advice on such difficult issues as deciding when to become sexually intimate and whether or not to live with their partner.

Getting to "I Do" by Dr. Patricia Allen and Sandra Harmon

  • This book is about discovering who you are and staying true to your nature and to what you really want in a relationship. Dr. Patricia Allen's jam-packed seminars in Los Angeles have resulted in over two thousand marriages. In her direct and no-nonsense style, Dr. Pat writes in this book how to attract the right man, when you should make the first move...and when you should not, why equality in a relationship may not be what you're looking for, why sex before commitment is a bad deal, how to have sensational sex, what makes a man run away from a relationship, how to know when you're giving too much, and more.

Online Dating for Dummies, by Judy Silverstein and Michael Lasky

  • New entry in the For Dummies series covers many aspects of Online Dating. A great starter, with sections on how to create a good screenname and profile, how to reply to ads, how to tell the fakes from the real people, and more.

The Rules for Online Dating, by Ellen Fein and Sherry Schneider

  • By the authors of the best-selling book for women “The Rules,” about setting personal boundaries and expecting the best in relationships, “The Rules For Online Dating” takes The Rules philosophies and strategies to the world of Internet Dating. The foundational principles in the book are fantastic (such as creating a great screenname, how to write a profile, the best pictures to use, how and when to reply to mail, how to tell “time-wasters,” not being too available via IM, etc). But many of the references to sites and their use have changed and are out of date since the book was published. All in all, though, when it comes to keeping women on track with their boundaries and self-esteem in the vast world of Online Dating, it’s worth a read!
