A survey carried out by the BBC reported that calls to computer help lines supplied by computer manufactures for warranty/software/hardware problems on average only resolve 49% of problems, most callers to these numbers are put on hold an average of 20 minutes resulting in a cost of approximately £30 or more before you even talk to anyone.

Once you finally get to talk to someone you are actually talking to a call centre operator and very rarely a qualified computer technician, their job is to feed your problem into a database on the computer in front of them, hoping a solution will be found.
