The purpose of the Trust is the preservation and maintenance of
the fabric of fourteen medieval churches, with an additional interest expressed
in the remains of four ruined churches. The churches all lie south and
east of the Royal Military Canal, one being in Sussex (Chichester Diocese)
the remainder in Kent (Canterbury Diocese).
The Trust also has expressed an interest in the ruins (all
on private land) at
At the inauguration of the Trust in 1982 (at the public instigation
of Archbishop Runcie, Richard Ingrams, and artist John Piper) an intention
was declared to raise a £100,000 fund to earn interest for grants
to the churches. This target was achieved in 1988, and the Trust now has
capital of over £500 000 enabling grants to be made each year. The
intention is to support the church Councils in their work, most monies
being disbursed for such necessary items as roofs, gutters, drains etc.
We see our prime purpose as helping to keep the buildings weathertight.
