Andrew HUTCHESON
b.13 Mar 1687
1. Andrew Hutcheson. Born 13 Mar 1687. Died 1760. Occupation Gentleman farmer.
Andrew Hutcheson is said to have been born in England 13 March, 1687 * although the spelling suggests Scotland rather than England in which the Hutchinson spelling predominates. Andrew was associated with Hutchinsons from Lincoln, England, and received land grants in areas occupied by English. There seems to be conflicting suggestions regarding Andrew's ancestry.
One record* assumes that he is descended from William Hutchinson and his famous wife Anne. However, records support that he was the son of Ann Hutcheson who was married a second time when Andrew was 10 years old to Joeffrey Reynolds. Her will which was probated at Warsaw, Richmond Co. VA. in 1736 mentions Andrew Hutcheson. So here we have an only son of a widowed mother beginning life in a young country. We also know that Andrew must have come to America some time between 1687 and 1697 when we find record of his mother. Whether his father survived the harsh voyage to this country is unclear. There is record of William Hutcheson and Capt. Robert Hutcheson coming to VA. in the 1630s and working their way up the Northern Neck. They were on good terms with Gov. Sir William Berkely who made several land grants to them. In 1662 he granted them 660 acres in Westmoreland Co., VA., the county mentioned in Lord Fairfax's grant to Andrew Hutcheson. It is possible that Andrew was one of their descendants.
What we do know as fact about Andrew is that he became a prominent member of Virginia society. The first hard evidence suggesting this is a deed dated 18 August 1726 in which Thomas, Lord Fairfax, 6th Baron of Cameron (1692-1782) and his associate William Cage grant Andrew Hutchison of Westmoreland Co., VA. 1119 acres and 40 perches of land located in Stafford Co., VA. near the westernmost side of what was called Salisbury Plain. The fact that Andrew was living in Westmoreland Co. which lies between the Rappahannock River and the Potomac River not far from Chesapeake Bay further substantiates the belief that he came from England, since many English landed at Corotman, the port just off the bay. Also in the 1720s, many English cavaliers or royalists moved west where the land was said to be more fertile. Eventually, Stafford Co. became Loudoun Co., where existing records of Andrew still remain.
Andrew married Jane Browning in 1710 in Hillsboro, Milford, New Hampshire. In a will dated 31 Jan. 1726 and recorded 8 Mar. 1726 in Westmoreland Co., VA. Jane's father Thomas left to his daughter Jane, wife of Andrew Hutchison, the plantation on which Andrew lived. After moving west, Andrew became a vestryman in Old Patrick Church. Bible records give us the names and birthdates of the children of Andrew and Jane.
