Some of my boards

Some of my own Warri boards

Patty A. Hardy
13 February 1999

I didn't start out planning to collect warri boards. After learning to play the game by computer and reading Claudia Zaslavsky's Africa Counts: Number and Pattern in African Culture I started noticing the boards in shops. I became fascinated by the creativity people lavished on them.

crocodile oware board

A board concealed inside a carving of a crocodile. Imported from Ghana, and purchased at a booth at the Afribbean Festival in Mountain View, California in 1998.

kofitall and danlevy boards

Top: A KofiTall board from Ghana, purchased at African Outlet of San Francisco.
Bottom: A laminated board, with glass playing pieces, by Hardwood Creations of California. Purchased at the King's Mountain Art Fair in 1997.

ivory coast oware board

This board was purchased at Games of Berkeley. It was labeled made in Cote D'Ivoire (the Ivory Coast). Originally it came with cowrie shells as playing pieces. That works, but the shells aren't as comfortable. I use the small basket to store the seeds.

lee farnum-badley warri board

This is my most recently purchased board. It was made in 1991 by Lee Farnum-Badley of Barbados. It is Barbados mahogany with brass trim.
