PIX OF THE WEEK

Peg Leg Pub was the site for this trip's AOL / TTOL gathering. From left to right: John, Dave, Jamie, Evelyn, Dan, Janet "Wilson", Kipp, Slipp, Jack, John, Patty, Mike and Darlene.

We stayed at Grand Case Beach Club, home of the Sunset Cafe. Appropriately named, I'd say!

Thanks to this year's hurricane-free season, the island looks greener and more floribundant than we've seen in a long time.

Although SXM saw no hurricanes in 2001, Hurricane Olga was churning away more than 1,000 miles to the north. This caused a noticeable change in the water, with rough seas and several rain squalls during our trip. Here, John checks out the waves crashing against the sea wall at Grand Case Beach Club.

Much has been said about the lack of sand on Club O's end of Orient Beach. The effects of Hurricane Olga, however, resulted in a lot of sand returning over the course of just a couple of days. (Thanks to Jerry for this picture.)

When the seas calmed back down, we took a sunset cruise on the Scoobidoo. Jamie and Gayle really enjoyed the feeling of the wind in their hair!

John has a "Red Stripe encounter" at Sunset Beach Bar.

Even if ownership of Sunset Beach Bar has changed, the party atmosphere has not. On Friday, a reggae band played the night away.

In Marigot, you can get a glass of fresh-squeezed sugar cane juice. Unlike the processed flavor of sugar that we're used to, the juice has a grassy, untamed flavor, with the natural sweetness coming through.

After the refreshing cane juice, it's on to Grand Case for a homecooked lunch of ribs off the grill, rice and peas and johnny cakes from the lolos.

We love swimming in the soft ocean waters in SXM...but sometimes a pool is so refreshing! The pool at Grand Case Beach Club is small, but very beautiful.

John's brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Gayle, took a glass-bottom boat ride out of Grand Case. They said it was very worthwhile. The boat goes out to Creole Rock and a diver with fish food ensures that plenty of creatures turn out for the viewing.
