James JACKSON, son of Walter JACKSON and Mary CHANCEY, was born 10 August 1773, Wilks County Ga. He married in 1796 to Temperance MOTLEY, daughter of Robert MOTLEY And Penelope DANIEL. James Was spokesman for the United States Commissioners, as an agent for Georgia. He was a delegate with the Indians at Muscogee and for a treaty of peace with the Creeks and the cession of all the lands between the Oconee & Ockmulgee to Georgia. The Failure of this treaty led to a duel between James Jackson and the Indian Agent, Mr. Seagrave.( See Picketts history of AL) Also (Indian Affairs, VOL 1) They moved to Autauga County, Alabama in 1817. He settled first in the community of Rocky Mount, and shortly after moved one mile North of what became the settlement of Independence. This is 28 miles North West of Montgomery, AL. He purchased a good portion of the land in that area, and later realized a good profit from it. He made a settlement which consisted of his son-in-law, Capt. L. Long, his father-in-law, Robert Motley and his sons.James Jackson was an attorney and represented the State in the House of Representives in 1820 and was a Senator in 1825. He was described by Hardy in his book as "far-seeing and ragacious, and a popular cultivated gentleman" . (SEE WILL OF JAMES JACKSON AT END OF PAGE) Temparance

4) *Absolom, an attorney, born 26 Feb 1805, Wilks County, GA. married Emma Bolling HALL, daughter of Bolling HALL And Jane ALBERCROMBIE, 28 September 1826 at his wife's home, "Ellerslie" in Autauga County (now Elmore County) He built his plantation, "The Elms" in 1837, which has been restored, on 1500 acres. Absolom died 22 Sept. 1870, Autauga Co.

5) Walter Clark, , b. 7 Sept. 1808, Balwin CO GA. married Francis Bibb Saffold. died 7 Sept 1826, Ellerslie Plantation, Now Elmore County AL. He was a medical Doctor And died while attending school.Buried Jackson Cem.

6) Crawford Motley, born 1817, Wilks County GA. Represented Autauga County in the Ligislature from 1843 - 1845, and again frm 1855 - 1857 and was Speaker in 1857, he was a Democrat and was in the Creek Indian War in 1836, He never married and entertained with lavish and style.He died 27 Feb 1860, Coosada, Autauga County, AL.

2) *James Wesley, born 9 November 1828, Autauga County, AL, Married Louisa Pairlee COTTON, daughter od Charles K, Cotton and Rutha Mahan (Mahon) , 27 August 1853 in Palestine, Anderson County, Texas. (James Wesley seem to have been the only one of these JACKSONS to go to Texas, I suppose he followed the COTTONS when they left AL) He became a Baptist Minister and he died 7 February 1906 in Anderson County and is buried in Judson Cemetery, near Cayuga in the Northern part Of Anderson County.

WILL OF JAMES JACKSON

State Of Alabama
(Atauga County)

In the Name of God Amen. I, James JACKSON of the afore said State, do ordain constitute and make this mu last will and testament, revoking all hereto made first. I recommend my soul to the God who gave the Savior to me. Then let my just debts be paid if any, after which I give and bequeath to my beloved wife, one hundred and sixty acres of land being the tract that I now reside on with all that appertain there unto, then I leave to my said wife, Big George and his family , Big Jack and his family, also Little George together with my riding carriage and carriage horses, all my cows, hogs, and sheep stock, also one thousend dollors in cash all of which my said wife is to enjoy her natural life time and at her decease, I wish an equal devision made among my children , I then give to my nephew, William Jackson, now of the state of Georgia, one Negro boy by the name of Henry, about 15 years old. I then give to the children minors and heirs of John West---(Westey?) deceased the availer of a note that I hold on William McPherson for eight hundred and fifty dollors together with such intterest may occur thereon, which said sum I wish my executors hereafter to be named to lay out in the purchase of Negros having a just regard to the number of heirs, their ages and with a view that each child have one Negro. T then give to John Norris for the support and maintaince of his blind children one hundred dollors ,after which I wish the residue of sev--- property as I may die possesed of to be thrown into equal shares or lots and equally devided among my children, with the exception of my household furniture which I wish equally devided between my wife and my son Crawford M. Such as he may select and in order carry this my my last will and testament into effect, I ordain, constitute and appoint Linerford Long, my two sons, Absalon and Crawford M., my true and lawful executors Inte--- where of I have here unto set my hand and seal, this second day of May in the year of our Lord, one thouseight hundred thirty two and in the Fifty Sixth year the American Independence.
