Plein Air paintings historically are executed on location
outdoors. This is as taught by the "great masters" of the nineteenth
century in order to capture the true light and mood of the moment. Indeed the
invention of oil paint in tubes allowed many more artists to easily enjoy painting
outdoors. Today plein air painters are taught to work on location rather than to paint
from photographs in the studio. In order to capure the fleeting light of the moment and to
remain "fresh," plein air paintings must develop quickly and necessarily
small ranging commonly from 8 x10 to 11x14 inches. Larger paintings can then be painted in
the studio using the plein air artwork as reference material rather than using
photographic materials. This leads to a more vibrant and truer representation of the
outdoor site.
