Summary:

 
The Second National Conference on DOING BUSINESS WITH INDIA was held at Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago on April 25, 2005. The conference was organized by Goodsoft, and was held in cooperation with MADAAN.COM, IndUS Business Journal and Language and Culture Worldwide. The conference was attended by corporate leaders from all over the United States.

In his opening address, the Consul General of India Mr. Arun Kumar said:  “There is growing acceptance of India as a successful high-growth destination. This has been achieved because of 60 years tradition of democratic norms and free society in India.”  Quoting the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, he said: “Our economy, polity and society have to be extraordinarily resilient and alert if we are to take full advantage of opportunities... We shall pay any price, bear any burden, and make any sacrifice to realize those dreams. India is on the move again. We shall make the future happen.”

Attorney Ram T. Madaan, Senior Partner at MADAAN.COM, while highlighting the Legal Aspects of Doing Business with India, said: “India offers a huge potential for investors who want to be in India for the long run. The regulatory procedures in India are gradually being simplified. But legal and regulatory requirements must be followed to be successful in the long run.”

Mr. Raghu Rau, Corporate Vice President, Global Marketing & Strategy, Motorola Networks Business, said: “Motorola has been doing business in India for over 25 years and its projected growth is 10-20% per year.” He highlighted the experience Motorola has in India for past 25 years.

Mr. Ron Somers, President, U.S.-India Business Council said: “India is rising, and becoming vital to U.S. interests. In 5 years, Indians will be twice as rich.”

Mr. Floyd Smith, Asia-Pacific Counsel of SC Johnson & Son, talking about practical aspects of negotiating Joint Ventures in India, said: “India is a land of opportunities for those who are truthful and above suspicion.”

Chetan Prabhu of Ernst & Young said: “India has a wide network of tax treaties. While investing in India, one should make use of those treaties.”  Amit Dhawan, Asst General Manager, ICICI Bank Ltd, New York, elaborated on Financing Operations in India.

Robin F. Mugford, Director, US Department of Commerce, Export Assistant Center, Libertyville, IL and Ross Harano, Managing Director, State of Illinois, Office of Trade & Investment, Chicago highlighted the Federal and State incentives for Exporters. They also elaborated on various incentives offered to small to big businesses.

Shrikar Dole, Director, Engineer Export Promotion Council of India, Chicago, said: “India offers huge opportunities for traders in engineering products.”

Tom Lumpkin, Associate Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship, University of Illinois at Chicago, while analyzing business feasibility for a Business Opportunity, said; “A strong business opportunity, to be successful, must be attractive, achievable, durable and value creating.”

The delegates appreciated the conference speakers for their outstanding presentations. One attendee said: “I learned the real ins and out from the experts who know how to do business with India.”
