On Saturday and Sunday, June 8th and June 9th, 2002, Brian Cimins, the promoter of Grapplers Quest, presents the 2002 Copa Atlantica Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships at the Marist High School Gym, 1241 Kennedy Blvd., Bayonne, NJ 07002.
Some 400 competitors are expected over the 2-day event. Understanding feedback is crucial to the long-term success of an event, Cimins has rectified issues from instructors, competitors, sponsors and fans... like fencing around the competition area, the sound system, entry fees, and the length of the Women's Division matches. Cimins also touched on competitors safety dealing with rules of submissions. Looking to give back to the community, Cimins has also implemented 'Help Grapple Hunger In New Jersey' benefiting the New Jersey Food Bank. But he didn't stop there, as this program also benefits the competitors and spectators of The Copa Atlantica by reducing their entry fees. Switching from high caliber competitor Super Fights to Absolute Divisions, allows white through black belts an opportunity to experience the same high caliber event on their way to earning the Copa Atlantica Gold Cup. Cimins is excited to hear that some instructors plan on presenting advancement belts to their students at the awards stand!

The private lessons schedule has been confirmed when Megaton Dias is in Pennsylvania for a series of workshops and private lessons in between June 12 & 15, 2002. The 3 times World Jiu-Jitsu Championships medalist '96, '99, '01 and 3 times Pan American champion '98, '00, '01 offers Gi and No-Gi formats. Private lessons are available in the morning of Thursday, June 13, 2002, in the afternoon and early evening of Friday, June 14, 2002 and in the afternoon of Saturday, June 15, 2002. It was rainy and cold, but the gloomy day in Massachusetts could not put a damper on the excitement seen when RING of FURY was held at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell, MA on Saturday, May 18, 2002. In the first ever fully sanctioned "closed fist" event in the history of the State of Massachusetts, fans witnessed 9 professional matches featuring locals Keith Rockel and Jorge Rivera.
In a 170 pound Under Card match, Pittsburgh's Jeremy Bennett defeated Matt Lee of Everett, MA be Unanimous Decision. How well did Jeremy Bennett do in his match to earn the decision? "He rocked - he won in dominant fashion I thought - the dude he fought didn't tap, but he sustained a keylock that has his arm in a sling."
Event Coordinator Tom Hafers worked diligently with the boxing commission to promote the fist USMMA event. Chief Deputy Boxing Commissioner Peter Sclamo was reportedly very impressed with the professionalism and preparedness of the event staff.

Help "Grapple" Hunger in New Jersey when the Grapplers Quest and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Community host The Copa Atlantica Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships on Saturday and Sunday, June 8-9, 2002. The event promoter, Brian Cimins, and The New Jersey Food Bank, have developed a unique food donation program for the upcoming martial arts event.
Discounts for the event will be $10 off for Competitors and $5 off for Spectators. To qualify for the discount in admission to the event, all you need to do is bring in 2 or more non-perishable canned goods to the event. Examples of non-perishable canned goods are Canned Fish (Tuna, Sardines), Canned Meat (Spam, Vienna Sausage), Canned Corned Beef Hash, Canned Soups (Chicken Noodle), Pork & Beans, Canned Spaghetti, Chili, Canned Vegetables, Canned Fruits, Peanut Butter, Bags of Rice. Any assistance in helping The Grapplers Quest and New Jersey Food Bank "grapple" hunger would be greatly appreciated.

This coming Saturday, May 18, 2002, the New England area will host RING of FURY, the first closed fist event for this group. Nine Mixed Martial Arts bouts are scheduled for an explosive evening! This will be the first ever fully sanctioned 'closed fist' event in the history of the State of Massachusetts. "We have done a lot of work with the boxing commission, with local advertising and with a state of the art arena," said Tom Hafers, event coordinator, "We have laid the groundwork for a very positive first show, everything’s done but the fights - we cannot wait!"
In Main Event matches, you'll see local favorites Keith Rockel and Jorge Rivera of MSA Team Elite, Clinton, MA meet Leo Dalla of BTT, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Jacen Flynn of Miletich Systems, Davenport, IA respectively. Lloyd Irving recently announced the opening of his first Pennsylvania school and welcomes the newest member to the Lloyd Irvin Team, Jared Weiner. Pennsylvania will be well represented when explosive mixed martial arts action lights up the Ohio Valley when World Extreme Fighting (WEF) invades the St. John Arena in Steubenville, OH on Saturday, May 11, 2002.
Police academy cadet Bill Vucick of Pittsburgh, PA meets firefighter Tom Sauer of Ocala, FL in the cage for the vacant WEF Light Heavyweight title. Pittsburgh’s Don Kaecher brings his 6-0 record to the cage when he puts his Featherweight title on the line against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Hermes Franca. Andy Cooper, Josh Goodman and Charlie Stevens see action in the Light Middleweight division.
