Super Star After-School Child Care Program

Super Star is a teacher supervised extended day program which promotes the educational, social, emotional and physical development of children whose parents are employed or attending school. Children from the Hackensack Public Schools who are enrolled in grades pre kindergarten through five are eligible. Hours are after school to 6:00 p. m. Hours on early dismissal days will start at time of dismissal. The fee for full participation is $145.00 per month payable by the first of the month. Hackensack C.A.R.E.S.

Hackensack Public Schools is a recipient of a federal grant to promote family literacy. This program targets families with children from birth to age seven. It provides adult literacy, parenting sessions and early childhood education to eligible families. Families must be residents of Hackensack and have a three to six year old child. Parents must be lacking a high school diploma and/or literacy skills or they must be Limited English Proficient. The program provides adult literacy offerings including GED and ESL, early childhood education, parenting education which includes hands-on activities for parents and children, special projects such as Reading is FUNdamental and family cultural experiences to museums, zoos, aquariums, and more, home visits with community home practitioners visiting participating families weekly to reinforce project parenting and family activities. PTA

Each elementary school has an active Parent-Teacher Association which serves the school and children in many ways. General meetings, parent education meetings featuring speakers and discussions on topics of interest, and PTA sponsored professional cultural arts programs for children are some of the activities provided to support students and parents in the Hackensack schools.

D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education)

This program was created in 1983 as a joint venture of the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Unified School District. D.A.R.E. sends a highly trained Hackensack police officer into fifth grade classrooms every week for 17 weeks to teach children how to refuse drugs and alcohol. The program follows a carefully structured curriculum, focusing on topics such as personal safety, drug use and misuse, consequences of behavior, resisting peer pressure, building self-esteem, assertiveness training, managing stress without drugs, media images of drug use, role models and support systems.
