Programs for Students With Special Needs

The Hackensack Public Schools provide the following special education programs within the district:

Classes for the Multiply Handicapped
Classes for the Communications Handicapped
Classes for the Neurologically Impaired
Classes for the Perceptually impaired
Classes for the Emotionally Disturbed
Resource Room Programs
Supplemental Instruction Programs
Speech and Language Programs
Home Instruction Services

If a child requires a special education program not provided within the district, the Child Study Team will investigate and seek an appropriate program, either in a public day or private day program.

Related Services

Transportation - When transportation is necessary for a special education program, it will be specified in the IEP. Transportation is arranged and provided by the Hackensack Board of Education.

Speech Services - Speech correction services are provided for classified students "Eligible for Speech Corrections Services" as recommended by the school speech correctionists.

Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy - Occupational and/or physical therapy shall be provided by the educationally certified or licensed therapists when recommended by a physician.

IEP - Individualized Educational Program - is a written document about the special services that will be provided for each child. Parents are asked to participate in its development and approve the plan before the child is placed in the program. This indicates a parent's approval of the child's placement in the recommended special education program.

Title I - Basic Skills Improvement Program

Title I, a funded program, offers children extra help in reading, writing and mathematics. Parents, teachers and students work together to assure that children will successfully accomplish their goals.
