In my research of my family tree; So far I have traced the MARSH family line back from

I am trying to
trace my Great-Great Grandfathers Birth details and ancestors
Research so far
indicates that he and his ancestors originated from
Evidence to date that he was born 1790.
Muster records
at the war Office show that William Marsh volunteered from Worcester Militia to
join 34th foot 1809 together with a Thomas Marsh believed to be his brother.
He served with
Rank Sergeant
Major. In the 34th (
At the time of
his enlistment to the 34th (
He was enlisted
in the
(This would make his date of birth as about 1790)
When he
appeared on
He signed the document himself, which is not often the case with the soldiers of that period. (This again would make his date of birth as about 1790)
He served in
the 2nd Battalion of the 34th Foot until the 3rd May 1817 with a total service
of 8 years 11 days.
He was discharged to pension - In consequence of having received a gunshot wound in the neck in action with the enemy at Maya in Spain on the 25th July 1813.
His general
conduct as a soldier has been always good.
He served with the Battalion during the whole of the Campaigns In the Peninsula, received a severe wound through the neck and a wound under the chin on the 25th July and is surely recommended for a pension
William Marsh
-shown as discharged at the Depot mustered at Fermoy in
William Marsh -
listed with Soldiers of the 2nd Battalion 34th Foot entitled to receive a
Kilmainham Hospital Pension from
William Marsh
is described as being about Twenty-Seven years old, Six feet in height, Light
Brown hair with Grey eyes and Fair complexion,
He was a Box Maker trade ( A term used to describe a coffin maker),
Wounded at
MAYOA granted pension as an Out Pensioner of Her Majesty's Royal Hospital
Chelsea and was admitted on the pension list on the 21st day of May 1817 by Lt.
Gen. Sir L. Cole.
At this date he was shown as residing in Wolverhampton, he appears to have continued living until his death there, which is recorded as 11th June 1848.
He is listed on
the Medal Roll as having the GSM 1793-1814 with clasps for B A V P Nive T which
equate to five being with the 34th Foot at Busaco 1810, Albuera 1811, Vittoria
1813, Pyrenees 1813, Nive 1813 and seemingly Toulouse 1814. The B could stand
for either Busaco or Barrow but since the 34th do not appear to have fought in
either of those battles, it is difficult to be sure at this stage.
I need to discover if he was with another
regiment prior to joining the 34th Foot. The surprise about my research the
reference to
6th June 1841 census of Cock Street Wolverhampton shows William as 50 years of age, therefore birth year 1790- 1791
11th June 1848.
On his death Certificate he is shown as 62 years of age, this would make his
birth year 1785 or 1786
I have to date been unable to resolve this discrepancy
I have traced
his second marriage on the 14th April.1839.
As yet unable to trace his William Marshes first wife and their children. I am eager to trace these ancestors also.
