Old Methodist Church Cemetery

This abandoned cemetery is owned by the Methodist Church Diocese, in Cranberry, Pa. They don't have the time or money to maintain the many church properties that have closed.  There is very little know about this church cemetery.

We discovered this cemetery, with the help of the Veterans Affairs Office, while in search of a Civil War ancestor, Abraham Dolby.  He qualifies for a free government headstone, but what to do about that oak tree growing out of his head...hmmmmmm? Suggestions?

The Clarion County Historical Society has a major project under way, restoring old cemeteries.   This deserving cemetery, in Venus, is next on their list.  Neighbors have reported seeing people removing headstones, and in one case, used to make a fireplace mantle.

If you would like to give aid to this noble cause; send your tax deductible contribution to: The Clarion County Historical Society Cemetery Fund, 18 Grant St., Clarion, Pa. 16214.

Another way you can help:
If you know anyone who is buried in a Clarion County Cemetery, that doesn't have a headstone, contact the Clarion County Historical Society to let them and let them know, so they can up date their records.

How do I get there?

Take Rt. 157 to Venus.   Opposite the Post Office, in Venus, there are two roads that come together to form a V.  Take the road to the right, Grower Road. On your left, you will pass a mobile home, an empty field, then...see that clump of trees? That's it!
