NEWS: : (TIM SMITH) CHARGER QUASHED IN GIRARD
KILLING
At the request of District Attorney Mortimer E. Graham,
the grand jury Tuesday returned a not true bill against Tom Smith,
demented Knox, Pa., man who was charged with the murders of Albert and
Johanna Biegert. "The proceedings
were entirely technical. We simply wanted to get the case off the
dockets," Graham explained. Smith
is now in Fairview Hospital for the Criminal Insane. He was committed
shortly after he confessed the double murder. Should Smith
ever recover form his insanity, something which is highly improbable in the
opinion of physicians who examined him, he would be a free man in view of the
murder charges quashed today.

NEWS: GOLDEN WEDDING, 1857-1907 STEWART
The fiftieth anniversary of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs.
W. P. Stewart was duly and appropriately celebrated at their home in
Curllsville on Wednesday, July 24. The occasion was a most interesting and
pleasant one. About 250 of their friends and neighbors from far and near
assembled in the early part of the day and took complete possession of the
premises. After a few hours spent in the most pleasant social intercourse
and delightful fellowship with friends new and old a bountiful dinner was served
in a pleasant little grove in the lot near the dwelling and partaken of with
evident relish by all present. Nothing occurred to disturb the peace of
mind of the company except a little shower of rain when they were about half
through eating. But it soon passed over. Fifty years ago W. P. Stewart
and Miss Salina E. Fackender were united in the bonds of marriage, but
notwithstanding the fact that half a century has rolled way since the wedding
day, they still seem cheerful and quite vigorous. Surely they have been highly
favored by a good providence. They received a number of substantial tokens
of esteem and affection in the way of valuable and useful presents. Their
only living son, J. N. Stewart and their only daughter, Mrs. J. F.
Benn, with their respective families, were present and added interest and
enjoyment of the occasion. When dinner was over and the time was drawing
near to separate, Rev. J. K. Adams, pastor of the M. E. church was called
on for an address, after which all repaired to their homes feeling that they had
had a good time that the occasion would be long remembered.
