A Summer of Possibility… Following a rigorous merit based competition; Finnegans
are selected for a ten-week paid internship in an executive agency in
Harrisburg, PA. To qualify, you must be an undergraduate student
at a Pennsylvania college or university. In addition, Pennsylvania residents
who are undergraduate students outside the Commonwealth may also apply. Applicants are expected to submit a complete
application in a timely manner. If selected, you must be willing to
temporarily relocate to the Harrisburg area. Internships are awarded on the basis of an
evaluation of the entire application, including a college transcript, a list
of extra-curricular activities (if any), letters of recommendation, and
completion of an essay requirement on a topic chosen by the Foundation. A
panel of distinguished Pennsylvanians, who serve as our Board of Judges,
evaluates each applicant anonymously. Particular attention is given to the
quality of the essay submitted. Each March, the newly selected Finnegans are
invited to The Governor’s Residence and honored with cash awards during a luncheon
held in the State Dining Room. The luncheon is the first opportunity for
members of the Governor’s staff to meet interns and plan for their
placements. In past years the Governor, First Lady, or other members of the
cabinet have—schedules permitting—attended. After beginning their respective assignments
throughout the capital, the Finnegans meet weekly for lunch with some of
Pennsylvania’s top public officials. The Foundation is pleased to have a
positive relationship with members of the Executive, Legislative, and
Judicial branches of government. Past guests have included: Estelle Richman,
Secretary of Public Welfare; State Treasurer Barbara Hafer; Pedro Cortés,
Secretary of the Commonwealth; and Stephen Reed, Mayor of Harrisburg
(Finnegan ’70). In addition, members of the Legislative Office of Research,
staff from the Auditor General’s Office, and members of the Commonwealth
Court and State Police have joined the Finnegans for lunch. We look forward to carrying on the tradition of
providing opportunities for those interested in learning more about
Pennsylvania government. We look forward to receiving your application! |
