James Peters Web Page

In a manuscript, "Personal Recollections and Genealogies of Families of Pike Co., Ohio", by Genevieve K. Obetz, it states that James is presumed to be from Ireland. He is also said to have drowned in the Susquehanna River trying to save a women, however, this has not been confirmed. It has also been written that he came to America in about 1743, but this has not been proven and her document has incorrect informationthroughout on the Pownall/Peters family. Albert L. Peters, the founder and author of the "Peters and Allied Families"(Quarterly Newsletter) stated, "... James Peters(father of John Peters) came to America in 1748 from Ireland. He married in 1749 to Mary Bird(Burd). In 1750 he drowned in the Susquehanna River while trying to rescue a woman who had fallen overboard a flatboard. His death was caused by his having a large amount of silver money on his person which pulled him to the bottom of the river." He further states that, "all this has not been documented and that others have noted John's birthdate as 1752, not 1750, but that this story was passed down from Archie Peters and Al's GG Grandfather Milton Peters, who were young enough to receive this information from their parents, sons of John and Rachel."
