Iris DeMent has written that she remembers making up songs at the age of four or five. Playing outside she would make up a song about her mother's flowers. "I remember it hit me like, 'Wow! This is really neat! You can make up your own songs!' That stuck with me." Her family comes from Arkansas with a strong religious influence, but Iris DeMent travels her own path. Her music is very personal and several songs reflect her family's influence.

Ms. DeMent became known to fans of Nanci Griffith during a 1994 tour where she was the opening act. Also, her song "Our Town" was played in the closing moments of the last episode of CBS's "Northern Exposure". She has appeared on the "David Letterman Show" among others.
