The Revised (1998) Saluki Standard

(according to the Jazirat hounds)

When obedience is out of the question

GENERAL APPEARANCE: Not only giving the impression of grace and symmetry, but also to give the appearance of looking really cool.
EXPRESSION: Dignified and gentle, combined with a "who, me? I didn't do it!!" look.
TEMPERAMENT: Reserved with strangers, unless they have something REALLY yummy, plus the ability to bark the house down upon hearing any noise, real or imaginary. REMEMBER! A Saluki should always be brave.... so remember what Aesop said "It is easy to be brave from a distance."
EYES: Naturally gorgeous of course, although overly long eyelashes are not desirable (due to greater drag and wind resistance).
NOSE: Should be firm and fairly pointy in order to "nudge" owners into coughing up more treats.
EARS: Long and mobile, not too low set, covered with fabulously long, silky hair. Ears are brought forward, displaying alertness and cuteness when trying to mooch a treat or to get out of trouble. Ears set back when chasing rabbits so that our owners screams to "come back" do not distract when on the chase.
BODY: What can we say? Kim Basinger-eat your heart out!
FEET: Unique shaped foot, so neccessary for digging craters in gardens. Front feet should be somewhere beneath the head and the hindquarters somewhere behind the front feet. (more about this below)
GAIT: Light, lifting, effortless, we could go on and on. With a tendency to converge, although with puppies this tends to mean that the hindquarters converge on the forequarters. Parallel movement is acceptable in pups as their hindquarters swing out to overtake their front feet when being taken for a walk (see crabbing). This movement must be encouraged in puppies as the owners appreciate it so much more when the pups move correctly in the ring.
FAULTS: Who are you kidding?
