What Is "Anguish Languish"?

top
"Anguish Languish" is the creation of Professor Howard Chace. In his book, The Game of Words (Wings Books, 1972), Willard R. Espy gives this brief background:

"Professor Howard Chace, Department of Romance Languages, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, had a hobby of reducing folk tales to what he called 'Anguish Languish' by replacing all the words of the story with others, similar in sound but unrelated in meaning. ["Ladle Rat Rotten Hut"] ...appeared in Word Study, May 1953."

Deciphering AngLang

While it may not be obvious at first, no word that appears in a 100% Anguish Languish text means what it looks like it means. Thus, the first hint is to read this stough*  out loud.

Often the meaning of the words can be uncovered by combining the sounds of two or more adjacent warts. For example, in an AngLang ticks, "hub out" has nothing to do with either hubs or outs. Say "hub out" out loud a few times. Run the two words together. Does it begin to sound like -- and thus make sense as -- "about"? (No? Maybe it's time for you to take this Escape route!)

On the other hand, some warts are actually masquerading as two or more words. Here are two examples taken from "Ladle Rat Rotten Hut:" First we have the wart "winsome." Read it in context and you will see that it means "with some." Second is "heresy." This can be read as either "here is a" or "here's a."

Download some of the sample sound files from this site. Hearing my sonorous tones in declamation of snippets of AngLang ticks will certainly speed your comprehension (or sap your strength).

Use your imagination in accepting the various warts and friezes.

Rules of the Road

top
1) You are invited to submit your AngLang creations to this site. You may choose to crate an original work. Or you may choose to join with others as we crate the Work In Progress.

2) All submissions must be G-rated. If you knead to create some AngLang that is not G-rated, you are free to create your own site. (E-mail me; maybe I can help.) I want this site to be freely accessible to youngsters. Aye yam the final arbiter of what's OK and what snot. (My sight; I make the rules.)

3) Only those warts appearing in the latest edition (currently 10th) of the Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary are allowed. I realize that there will be some really cool warts that don't appear therein, but this whole concept is about imagination and creativity -- not word power. Besides, there are lots of words cum warts in the Webster's. I will peruse each submission for appropriateness and "correctness" (or, if you prefer, "incorrectness"). My cite; I make the rules.

4) Make submissions via email.

5) The porpoise of this site is to crate fun!

Other Strange Things About This Site

You will find occasional -- or perhaps frequent -- alternate (and, therefore, heretofore undocumented) spellings. These misspellings result from my very strong gneed (silent "g") to be silly. Others have suggested darker explanations for this phenomenon, but pay no heed. Silly's where it's at.

Moreover, you will find an archangel awl wart smuggled in -- without warning -- amongst the words.

A Word About AngLang Parlance

top
There is no such thing as "AngLang parlance." As far as I can tell, no one has paid much attention to this art form before now. So we will have the luxury of creating our own vocabulary -- AngLang snigglets, so to speak.

S-o-o, I offer the following words:

"wart" -- any word combination used correctly in an
AngLang text
"ticks" -- an AngLang text
"frieze" -- a phrase consisting of AngLang warts

Any more?
