Baseball Cards - History

After photography was invented, baseball players started having their pictures taken for baseball cards. Peck & Snyder sporting goods began making cards featuring baseball teams which some consider the first baseball cards. These were business card size. Baseball cards came with cigarettes a lot of the time in the late 1880's. These are referred to as tobacco cards and are extremely valuable. As a matter of fact the most valuable baseball card is the Honus Wagner tobacco card, extremely rare because he fought to have the printing of the card stopped. Baseball cards started to appear on Cracker Jack boxes too until WW I, when baseball card production more or less stopped for a short time. Also, there was the Black Sox scandal where members worked with gamblers to throw the 1919 World Series which seriously hurt baseball's image. A chewing gum company named Goudey started making baseball cards in 1933. After WW II Topps came on the scene and bought out Bowman which essentially gave them a monopoly for many years. Fleer and Donruss issued baseball cards in the 1980's though bringing this to an end. Topps sued but lost. Score and Upperdeck started making cards as well.
