Dorchester
Welcome to Dorchester! Dorchester was a coal camp in southwestern Virginia, founded in 1885. I grew up there in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. The mines and coke-producing facility were closed in 1967 and most of the houses torn down. Much of the land was strip mined. I cant take you there today and show you our house, or the school, or the church. In fact so much of the dirt has been rearranged, I can hardly show you where they used to be.
Through the media of computers and old pictures, we are creating a virtual Dorchester . Others whose work is included in this site are: James Fawbush, Joseph Fawbush, and Gladys Stallard. Margaret Adams collected and made available many of the pictures. A Dorchester reunion was held in 1993 and over 200 people attended from all over the United States.
We hope you enjoy touring the old home place. We are constantly adding new areas, so come back again and visit. We are attempting to make this as authentic as we can. Come and visit our mountain heritage!
This web site is dedicated to those people who lived and worked in Dorchester, Virginia.
