The record of the laying out of the village of Jenera is dated April
14, 1883. The ground allotted was seven and forty hundredth acres, about
equally divided between Peter Traucht, Samuel Fellers and John Heldman.
It is located on what was then the Northern Ohio Railroad. It was formerly
known as the German Settlement for the reason that all the pioneers Germans
from Hesse Darmstadt, Germany. A Post Office was established here in 1884. In 1892 the town was incorporated and B. C. Steinman was the first mayor. The town was named in honor of Dr. Amos B. Jenner, the first Physician to locate here. As well as being the first Doctor he had one side of his shop made into a drug and dry goods store combined. The town was supposed to be called Jenneria but when the information of changing the town's name from Viola to Jenneria was sent to the Post Office Department at Washington, D.C., the writing was mis-interpreted and the Post Office was listed as Jenera. |
