HOW TO SURVIVE OUR ECONOMIC CRISIS¼..AND KEEP ON MODELING Welcome to the summer of 2008 in the U.S. Here’s how your typical day might go. You wake to a breakfast of eggs, bacon and coffee, all of which cost substantially more than they did one year ago. On the way to work, you realize the money you spent on gas this week might leave your car with fumes or even less by Friday. There’s more stress at work lately, too. The company is talking about sending the customer service and technical support department work to India, saving costs but potentially cutting the jobs of 50 loyal and hard working Americans and forcing your customers to learn a second language to get help. Upon arriving at home, you open the mail and find the electric and gas bills up by five percent since last year. Need a sedative to go to sleep? Too bad your employer doesn’t cover the meds you need to get some rest. Worse yet, that son of a bitch Fred Sterns at Fred’s Model World just jacked up shipping rates by about fifty cents a kit. This guy must be getting rich pocketing all the extra dough from his suffering customers. The truth is, we are in the midst of an economic crisis in our beloved country, but Fred isn’t making money raising shipping rates. He is simply passing the buck from his shipper to you. By the way, please note I used the word economic crisis to describe our dilemma. We are not in a recession, rather a more serious situation in which a poison mix of negative factors means tough times for our country for an extended period of time. In tough times like this, we look to our local, state and federal governments for help. Don’t hold your breath, folks, they don’t have many answers. It is up to each of us to take the initiative and make the best of all this bad news, rather than waiting for the crisis to pass. It is also important to keep your mental health intact in this whirlwind of bad news, and that means hanging onto your loved ones¼.and your wonderful hobby of modeling. How can you save money, keep what you have and continue modeling at the same time? Keep reading and I will do what I can to point you in the right direction. I have been a professional writer since 1980, seeing dozens of my articles published in consumer, humor, sports and toy publications. My experience writing self help and how to articles for the consumer market will serve you well as I suggest money saving ideas for downturns in the economy. At Home Electricity-rule number 1, if no one is in the room, shut off the lights, radio and tv. Do not, as some articles have stated, turn off the power strip controlling the tv, cable box and microwave unless you like continually reprogramming these devices. Turn you’re a/c down by several degrees during the day, off at night once temps drop below 80. A programmable thermostat will let you ramp temps up and down for each hour of the day. Gas-same as with the a/c, turn it down or off. Energy loss-if you don’t have the money for new energy saving windows, seal off air escape routes in frames or around the windows with inexpensive sealing materials. Washers and Dryers-don’t do half loads of wash or dryer items, even if you have to wait several days to accumulate a load of that type of clothing. At The Store I know several people who have a little food storeroom in their basement. This is where extras of non perishable goods are kept, notably canned and bottled items. If you like a certain brand of ketchup, buy at least one when it goes on sale whether you need it or not. Make a list of non perishables ,check the sales ads out at your favorite store and stock up. Consider trying store or generic brands of foods and other items to save money. The quality could be as good as that expensive national brand you like, especially on goods such as garbage bags, paper supplies and other non food items. The junk food adds up. With two teens, sometimes I just have to say no to three varieties of chips, two types of breakfast bars and ice cream. These treats can jack up the grocery bill by $20 or more each week. For yourself, look at cheaper cuts of meat for hamburgers, bacon and even steak. Eating pasta meals is cheaper than meat. Try to keep your trips to the store to once a week for the main buying and twice or less for the times in between. Plan your meals and buy during the main trip so you won’t be caught short. You may be spending $100 a week for groceries during the main trip, but another $50 or more after that, plus the cost of gas getting to the market. During the Day Are you stopping for that super duper deluxe coffee with 15 ingredients at $5 a pop every day? Time to consider brewing your own coffee at home, putting it in an insulated cup and taking it on the commute in. Savings per week? Up to $25. Start brown bagging at least three days a week, taking leftovers or sandwiches and fruit, as well as a little treat or two. Eating out every day for lunch adds up. Savings per week? Up to $40. Stay away from those vending machines at work. Bring your own snacks, soda and sweets. Savings per week? $5 or more. If you like to run errands during lunch hour, unless its within a few miles from work, skip it. Don’t waste gas. On the Road Everybody knows its important to check the inflation of your car tires, but how much talk have you heard about nitrogen? The Fred’s Model World truckster and Dena’s crash test Saturn both have tires inflated with nitrogen, offering less rolling resistance, better inflation retention and less susceptibility to flat tires than good old air. Since we began using nitrogen in our tires four years ago there have been no low or flat tires and a happier driving experience. One trick I use on the road to save gas is coasting. If you live in an area with a lot of stop and go driving, try going light on the gas up to the speed limit and anticipating traffic lights changing hundreds of feet ahead of you. A light that’s red but will turn green in 20 seconds means foot off the gas, coasting until the light changes, then gradually accelerating to the speed limit again. LEISURE TIME This year might not be a good time to take that cross country vacation. The gas costs alone could be a trip killer, not to mention higher prices for food. Take a step back and consider a series of day trips to places within 100 miles from home that you haven’t been to. In Buffalo, NY, that could take us south to Erie, PA, east to Rochester or north to the wonderful cities of Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario. Check with AAA or ask your state’s tourism department for ideas on where to go. Eating out with the family is a great activity, but its quickly becoming a luxury. Food for a family of four at a typical sit down chain restaurant can easily be $50. If you are doing this once a week, that’s $2600 a year!! Consider a large pizza for $15 and save a bundle. If you like attending major sporting events, including Nascar, that can easily be several hundred dollars for each trip you take. Stay at home, watch it on tv, or try cheaper alternatives such as high school sports or your local short track or minor league sports team. WANT VERSUS NEED-what its all about Sometimes you just have to say no. A decision about what you want versus something that’s an absolute must can be difficult to live with. A noisy washing machine, while a nuisance, can either be repaired or lived with. When it breaks for good, be prepared to buy a new one by researching makes, models and prices ahead of time. Who knows, your washer might outlast you, but a new one might outlast your pocketbook. Expensive new cars are wanted, a new car might be needed, but do you buy the two year old model for $18,000 or the new one for $28K? These are two examples of want versus need. We are “blessed” with having the latest gadgets , but sometimes its all too much. Keeping up with the Jones’ might be great for status but just not practical. The next time you are faced with a decision on a major purchase, consider the scales of want and need before reaching for that credit card. YOUR MODELING HOBBY-HOW TO KEEP IT GOING AT FULL SPEED I have been in business for nearly 10 years, and one fact I have always kept in mind in dealing with all aspects of my endeavor is that modeling money is discretionary. Simply said, no one HAS to buy my kits. The money that comes into my life is based upon a decision by a hobbyist who wants something meaningful to do with their leisure time. Everyone should have some satisfaction in their life, luckily, you have chosen a hobby which can easily be managed to be affordable and enjoyable. First, get organized and make a detailed inventory of you collection; unbuilt, started and built kits, plus resin, promos and other relevant items. You can use a similar format to Fred’s Model World lists or try a something else that you can work with. Once done, you can decide what holes in the collection need to be filled in and what projects you might want to try for the future. Also, a wish list of collector kits you can’t live without. This will make things easier for you when you order from Fred’s or another mail order model house. Second, stop overpaying for kits on internet auction sites. That rare kit will come around again sometime and its not worth paying $150 for a $45 kit anyway. Also, buying nine kits from nine different sellers and paying about $90 for shipping is not worthwhile. An order of nine kits from Fred’s will cost you about $17 in shipping. Don’t get caught up in the bidding mania; there’s worse things in life than losing an auction on a model kit. Also remember, if you don’t know who you are buying from you might get a surprise in the mail. Factory sealed does not mean someone outside the factory did it 20 years later. Take advantage of clearance sales at mail order model places or your local hobby shop. These often take place in the summer, when the hobby slows down. Exhibit A, our attached list, which follows this article. During peak season, from October to about early April, dealers will be less likely to sell at reduced costs. If you like to attend model shows, make it worthwhile. Driving 100 miles round trip to look at kits from 10 vendors may not be worth the time and gas money it takes. Better to travel a bit farther to a major show with 200 tables and take home a nice trunk load of kits. Don’t forget tolls and meals add to the bill even further. Brown bag it to save a few bucks on food. Don’t worry, I won’t laugh at you. Easy does it on aftermarket detail parts. I have known people who spent $15 on a kit and ten times that on detail parts to make it show quality. Whoa Nelly, there are cheaper ways to detail a model and make it a show winner than ordering all those extra goodies. Read your favorite model magazine or favorite modeling website for tips on building. Some of you might wonder why I just spent four pages and about $40 of printing costs on a subject that could induce modelers to buy less from me. The truth is I care too much about my customers and want to steer them in the right direction. The economy is a steam roller and there are plenty of people ready and willing to take whatever money you give them for any product. Be wise and keep a positive outlook on a daily basis to get through these trying times¼.and keep on modeling! |
