Be sure to check out each band’s website because each band has its own intrinsic value-musically, culturally, and spiritually.  Each band is unique in its approach to producing live, improvisational musical spontaneity, and pleasing its fans and listeners.  From funk to blues, jazz to reggae, bluegrass to Cajun, and trance to rock, there is a myriad of different musical styles inherent in each band’s musical palette.   The forefathers of the jamband scene are obviously the Grateful Dead.  Along with the Dead are some other bands that, though not the forefathers of the scene, have an important influence on today’s jambands.  Some of these are the Allman Brothers Band, Little Feat, and the Radiators.  Also among them are Max Creek, the Funky Meters, and, yes, Phish.  Though Phish is today considered the stalwart band on the scene, they are relatively old cats in the scene, beginning their musical journey way back in 1983.  Most of the bands today are way younger than 20 years old.

There are many, many bands that are Dead cover bands.  They play Dead songs—sometimes note for note, sometimes with their own unique flair.  The monster Dead cover band is Dark Star Orchestra.  They not only play each song note for note, but they play complete concerts that the Dead played setlist for setlist!!  The best Dead cover band near me is undoubtedly Splintered Sunlight.  They play Dead songs beautifully and with much, much skill.  Their lead singer and guitarist is Butchy Sorochow.  He is absolutely amazing at copying Jerry licks and lyrics, and he does it with his own, awesome touch.  He has its own JGB cover band called The Butchy Band.  I have yet to see them, but I’m sure that they’re great.  Check out Splintered Sunlight every Tuesday night at Brownie’s 23 East in Ardmore, PA.  They’re the best Dead cover band in the tri-state area and the cover is only $5.  You can get drunk and listen to these fellas jam out like no other.
