AVIATIK D.I BERG

COMMENTS: The first solely Austrian produced fighter, the Berg was designed by Julius von Berg. A late war design featuring twin forward firing machineguns, good speed, maneuverability and rate of climb, the Berg also sufferred from numerous design flaws. Foremost was an unreliable engine and structural weakness, the wings and tail structures could fail in high load situations and the engine was prone to overheating.  Some early variants also had the armament placed such that jams could not be cleared by the pilot, who could not reach the guns. An early feature was a wheel style control yoke, which was uncommon and unpopular in such a type and which soon was replaced by the standard stick.
