AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN AIRCRAFT OF WORLD WAR ONE

----------------------------------------------------------------

Austro-Hungarian Forces fought in the war as the second partner in the alliance known as the Central Powers, whose primary member was the German Empire.  Austro-Hungary was located south of Germany and north and east of Italy.  Its primary opponent in the war was Russia.  Austro-Hungary actually precipitated the war by attacking the Russian's Ally Serbia.  As such Austro-Hungarian forces fought throughout the conflict.  Their primary enemies were the Russians and the Italians however they also invaded Poland, Rumania and engaged British and French Forces.  Fifty-six Austro-Hungarian pilots became aces. The leading Austro-Hungarian Ace was Godwin Brumowski with 35 credited kills.

The Austro-Hungarian Empire's Aircraft were marked with the black Cross Patee and later the Balkan Cross upon a white stripe and on the tail upon a white stripe between two red stripes.  Naval Aircraft would have the Hungarian Coat of Arms imposed upon the stripes as set forth in the upper left corner of this page
