Cuenca

Cuenca;  the capital of Azuay Province. Most Ecuadorians consider Cuenca to be their country's most beautiful city and it's hard to find anyone who would argue. Cuenca means river basin or bowl in Spanish, and the city is situaded at 8,3335 ft on the banks of the Tomebamba River.

The city has retained its colonial architecture and feel, with new construction in a neocolonial style that is compatible with existing structures. No boxy skyscrapers to obliterate the surrounding mountains! Instaid, the blue domes of the new cathedral dominate the skyline. Because of its cobblestone streets, interior patios and public plazas overflowing with flowers and greenery, and whitewashed buildings with huge, old wooden doors and ironwork balconies, Cuenca is a walker's delight. In fact, you really need to wander at slow and gentle pace to appreciate and absorb the datails of the city.

EL CAJAS NATIONAL PARK
Some of the most varied and spectacular scenery in the country fills this reserve, whose proximity to Cuenca—only one hour’s drive west—helps make it one of the most popular outdoor destinations in the area. El Cajas’s 70,000 acres shelter everything from cloud forest to rocky lunar landscapes, but it’s the lakes (more than 200 of them) scattered among jagged peaks that characterize the reserve best. Despite its proximity to Cuenca, it’s an easy place to find a surprising amount of solitude
