Manabí Province
The origen of the name of the Province corresponds to two Quechua MANA meaning no or nothing and PI which in Caubi means water, thus MANABI means no water. Later on, PI was changed to BI which also means water.
The presence of the Mayas en Manabí dates back to approximately the year 500 A.C, their main city being Jocay, which today is Manta. Its high level of civilization and antiquity has had a strong influence on many later civilizations of South America, not only in the coastal region but also in interior regions. This is why we can say Manabí was the center of the Maya culture.
The Caras appeared 300 years later where today Bahia de Caraquez stands and where they founded their reing making Bahia their capital.
Portoviejo
Also Known as the city of the -Royal Tamarindo-. It acquired this fame because of the tamarind tree plantations which grew so tall and lush that they became the pride of the city.
Portoviejo is by tradition a cultured and hospitalarian city and one of the most ancient of Ecuador and America.
