Guayaquil and the South Coast
Many visitors to Ecuador are surprised to learn that the seaport of Guayaquil is the country's largest city. But size is not only surprise in this commercial city which offers the nation's finest hotels, restaurants and shopping.
Situaded on the west bank of the busy Rio Guayas, navigable for the biggest of occean vessels heading in from the Pacific via the Golfo of Guayaquil, this city handles 90 percent of Ecuador's import and 50 percent of its exports.
A name inspired by tragedy
Legend has it that the Huancavilcas Chieftain, Guayas, killed his beautiful wife Quil then drowned himself so that the Spaniards would not capture them. The tragedy of this doomed couple is supposed to be inspired the city's name. This province is very rich in natural resources, both in variety and in quantity, making one of the most productive zones of the country. Its land is suitable for cattle raising, the cultivation of bananas, cacao, coffe, rice, soybeans, corn, tangerines, oranges, papaya, melon among other products. Guayaquil was founded by the Spaniard Francisco de Orellana on the 25th of July 1537.

Parque Historico Guayaquil

Beaches of the South
Salinas lying in a half-moon bay on the tip of the Santa Elena Peninsula. a total of 90 miles from Guayaquil. It has a pleasant beaches, tall buildings, excellent hotels, good restaurants, a casino and a yacht club which lure throngs of swimmers and sun baskers.

Playas which is officially General Villamil, is an important fishing village. However, the main focus of this little town is tourism, and the sandy beaches are the lure for weekend crowds.
 
Punta Blanca has an exquisite, isolated beach that attracts shell collectors. Ayangue, 28 miles further north, has white beaches, a gentle slope and no big waves, making it ideal for children.
