Drill Instructions!

The Highspeed Air Turbine Handpiece!

I use a high speed dental drill to carve my egg sculptures.  You will need to have a compressor to use this dental drill.

Here's a bit of info on the drill:

The handpiece, (dental drill) is designed to operate with an air supply pressure between 28 to 30 pounds per square inch (psi).  It must not be operated beyond 30 psi.  It has been engineered to develop an unusual high cutting torque with rotation speeds between 380,000 to 420,000 rpm.

The True Speed 2 handpiece is designed to accept regular friction grip (FG) burs (shafts 1/16 in size).  The special bur wrench is required to open and close the chuck when inserting and removing burs which is included with the drill.

The following is the correct way to use the drill and wrench.

Drill assembly

This is the correct way to place the "wretch" on to the handpiece (drill).  Pull the knob of the wrench back and attach the wrench to the head of the drill.  When the nob is pushed into the head, the square tip of the wrench must be aligned with the corresponding square hole in the head.  Rotate the wrench counterclockwise to open the collet and clockwise to close it.  Now...push the knob into the back of the head..and turn counterclockwise to open the collet.  The top of the wretch will flip over like this picture:

Turn counterclockwise just enough to loosen the collet...pull the non-bur that came with the drill...out.

Next...place a bur that has a 1/16 shaft only into the head as shown..should slide in easy.  Keeping the wretch in place...now turn it clockwise to tighten.  The top of the wretch will now flip over again as shown.

Now..pull the wretch off by pulling back the handle of the wretch and lift off.  Wha-la!  You did it![Image]

DO NOT tighten the chuck without a bur installed as this will lead to damage.  Never operate the handpiece without a properly secured bur in the chuck.

Do not extend the bur from the chuck beyond the bur taper as this could cause the bur to eject or may cause the head to fracture with the possibility of an injury to yourself.

Now let's connect the drill to the tubing.

This is a picture of the bottom on the drill..notice the 4 holes.  (The drill came with a protective plastic covering on the bottom of the drill...please remove it first)

This is a picture of the end of the tubing...there are 5 holes..but only 4 active ones.  One is fake...must be for decoration!  :)

Like a puzzle..place the drill into the holes...keeping the metal covering on the tubing back to obtain access as shown:

Now pull up the metal covering to screw everything into place so that the compressed air does not blow the tubing off.

Ta-da!

Now the other end of the tubing is simple enough..just screw on the attachment to your compressor.

Please let me know as soon as you get things hooked up.  Refer back to your instructions that came with the drill to help you also.

The lubricant comes in a spray can.

All you do with it is remove the bur and spray a quick spray into the hole that the bur came out of....then place the bur back in..tighten it and run to express all the lube.  (please make sure you have a bur securely in place before expressing the excess lube!!)  Make sure it's all out...before you drill on eggs...the lube may stain the eggs...it's like oil.  Use very little.

I can supply you with a real dental drill if you are unable to find one on your own.  I sell the dental drill with all necessary attachments:  tubing, connectors on both ends and the lube for $250.00.  You will need to have or buy yourself a compressor to run the drill.

If a Dental foot controller is what you prefer to control the speed (which is what I do)  a dental foot piece and the drill will only be $350.00.  Again..you will need to have or buy a compressor to run the drill.

Occasionally I can find used dental drills and foot pieces...they are then sold on a first come first serve bases for less.
