| Welcome This month the featured game is from the 1995 Donner Memorial. The players, 19 year old Judit Polgar and the creative and innovative Alexei Shirov, both played to win as a draw was never considered. Shirov plays a little too unsound and Polgar takes full advantage, forcing him to forego castling and struggle to hold the position. However, it is not to be for Shirov as he goes down in flames. This site will be converted to a computer page within the next few weeks. For those of you who enjoy this page, go to Joe's Chess Page. Joe's Chess Page also offers a large and useful selection of links to some of the most essential chess sites on the Internet. In addition, the Photo Gallery contains many pictures of some of the most interesting and influential players in history. A recent addition to the Chess page is a library of some of the greatest games of all time. They are in .pgn format and can be downloaded at your convenience. PGN files can be opened in any text editor or may be opened in the ChessBase, ClubMate or KenChess database/pgn readers and graphically replayed Note: These files are zipped (compressed). New! A PGN

| Graphical Interfaces for Online Chess Servers: FICS, EICS, ICC | ||
| Application | Features and Recommendation (1-5) | |
| CClient 1.41 | The Cadillac of chess interfaces. A cornucopia of features includes: games sought graph, customizable wave file sound for many events; fully sizeable, true 3D board and pieces with customizable perspective and colors, real-time, customizable lists for things like games played, players available, games, etc. There are really too many features to list here. The only drawback is the playing board may be too small for some. But it is beautiful and the pieces are nice. My recommendation: 5 | |
| Winboard 4.0.2 | This is an excellent chess interface. Comes with almost all the features of CClient. Also included is the GNU chess engine. Has ablility to replay .pgn files. Fully customizable. The board is not the best looking and it requires more memory to run than the other programs (the pieces tend to move slowly) but these are very minor complaints. My recommendation: 4 | |
| SLICS 2.5p | AKA Chessbd. One of the first and best chess interfaces. A multitude of useful features. All windows are resizable. You can edit the logon scripts, select different piece configurations, configure or add new command buttons. This one's more for the advanced computer user who wants an interface styled specifically to their demands. My recommendation: 4 | |
| Thief | Excellent program with all the necessary features. Also includes a large selection of boards and pieces. 4 | |
| BlitzIn 2.31 | This is the ICC chess interface. Really the best for the ICC. If you only play there (and you shouldn't) this is the best. Beautiful board and piece set. Chat windows, telnet screen, etc. Main drawback is it only runs on ICC. I won't offer a recommendation here, its up to you. Unfortunately, the ICC is now proprietary and no other programs but BlitzIn can be used on the site. An unfortunate occurrence. | |
