Kinzel
Family Research Site
"On application to the German Government for a permit to go to
America, and it being granted, John Christopher Kinzel, a
native of Saxony, Germany, with his wife, Sophia Anna, and
four children, Fredrica, Frederick [John], Gotlieb
John, and Wilhelm John, left Bremen, with a large heavily
laden cedar chest, other belongings, and a passport to rich relatives
in Charleston, S. C."
So begins the story of the Johan Cristoph and Sophia Anna
Künzel family's immirgration to America in 1836. Settling first
in the Columbia, SC, area and eventually in Knox county TN, five more
children ( four boys and a girl) would be born. The youngest male,
Edward John, would found a mountain retreat that still bears his
name:
Kinzel
Springs, now just a wide spot in the road a few miles outside of
Townsend, TN. If you go there, be sure to eat at the Kinzel House
Restaurant (alas, closed by fire in 1999) &emdash; no relation to the
Kinzels, but good food.
Edward John and his second wife, Catherine Helena Thomas, began
writing a history of the Kinzel family, which she published after his
death and called Seven Johns,
Brothers, and which is the source for much of the Kinzel
information presented here.
