From the North Carolina Arichives we have:
the will of William Roberson, dated 9 August 1809, Will Book 3, page 91, Surry County Wills.
Treasurer's and Comptroller's Papers, Revolutionary Pay Voucher Number 4627, State of North Carolina, Salisbury District: 13 March 1784, by order - Charles Bruce and James Hunter, Auditors and Sam Henderson, Clerk.
This William Roberson/Robinson lived in Surry County, North Carolina (the portion now in Yadkin Co.) from at least 1780 (this date is printed on a map made by Hughes Historical Maps) when he had land registered there. Surry Co., NC Land Entries, 1778-1781 by Agnes M. Wells, Virginia G. Phillips, and Carol J. Leonard, 1987, shows:
#546 - William Roberson enters 400 acres of land in Surry Co. on Dills Creek including my plantation for complement - August 13, 1778. [Warrant granted to H.S.]
#145 - Isaac Manuwell enters 100 acres in Surry Co. lying on a abranch of the Double Creek adjoining William Howard's line and the Widow Robersons including my improvement for complement - June 5, 1778. [Warrant granted]
The Index to Hughes' Historical Map of Surry County, Compiled and printed in cooperation with the Surry County Historical Society, February 1978 shows a listing for William Robertson in 1765 and one for Wlilliam Robeson, 1761, but these seem to be farther north than the spots marked on the map I have of the portion now considered Yadkin Co.
A Revolutionary Pay Voucher, #4627 - State of North Carolina, Salisbury District, 13th day of March 1784 states:
This is to certify that William Robinson was allowed eight pounds specie for public claims by the Upper Board of Auditors the 13th Day of March 1784. Signed by Charles Bruce and James Hunter.
This document was used as the basis for an application for DAR which I copied in Washington, D.C. last summer. The National Number on the application is 561283 for Mrs. Ruth Washam Jones of Jackson, TN. She lists this pay voucher and his will as partial proof. She also has family records and lists references to various publications of Elizabeth Weir McPherson. I only know of one of these publications, Holcombs - Nation Builders, to which my great aunts contributed Bible records and first hand knowledge back in the 1940s. The old family Bible records they had then have disappeared, and all I have are hand written copies. Incidently, this family of Holcombs went to Maury and Lawrence Co. TN in the early 1800s and since there were also a lot of Robertson, etc. families there I think they may all be related. It is worth the next researcher knowing to look in that area.
The Surry County, NC marriage license of William's daughter, Mary, and William Holcomb (dated Feb. 13, 1795 on the outside) spells her name as Robinson, as does the pay voucher above. However, in his willl (Will Book 3, page 91, Surry County Wills 1770-1922 North Carolina 9 August 1809 - available in the N.C. Archives), he is listed as Roberson and also signs as Roberson. It is interesting that he lists one of his children as "Nutte Robers" - and after I wrote this letter the first time I was searching on a CD for marriages, and found the marriage listing for "Nutty Roberson and Edmond Roberds" in Surry County, NC 28/07/1805. So this was really a girl, and the spellings are not quite as inconsistent as I originally thought.
Joseph Winston His Entry Book Surry County, NC Land Entries 1778-1781by Agnes M. Wells, Virginia G. Phillips and Carol J. Leonard shows:
Roberson, William 546, 916
Robinson, William 925, 938
The entries for these numbers show:
546 - William Roberson enters 400 acres of land in Surry Co. on Dills Creek including my plantation for complement - August 13, 1778. [Warrant granted to H.S.]
916 - Rachall Landers enters 200 acres of land in Surry Co. on the waters of Dills Creek above William Roberson including my improvement for complement - November 11, 1778. [Warrant greanted to H. S. ]
925 - William Ridens, Junr. enters 500 acres of land in Surry Co. on the draughts of the Yadkin Rilver bounded on the S by the land of Jno. Thos. Longino, on the W by Michael Sprinkle, and on the N by William Robinson including his plantation - November 11, 1778. [Warrant granted to H.S. ]
938 - William Head enters 200 acres of land in Surry Co. above William Robinson's on the S fork of Dills Creek including the improvement of George Head - November 12, 1778. [Warrant granted to H. S.]
A map I purchased from the Custom House of Yadkin County land owners shows 2 parcels owned by William Robertson in 1780. One is west of the north/south bend of the Yadkin River and south of Dills Creek, and the other is at the western end of Dills Creek. The parcels appear to be several miles apart.
I suspect that all of these references are to the same man. As his will shows he had a son named William who was at least 21 years old in 1809. I would like to find an earlier William Roberson/Robinson to tie into the one who died in 1809, and I'm hoping the files of Lunenburg County, Virginia might be the place to look.
